    From what I have heard and asked other people, the 3500 setup is taller. And to make the 3500 setup work you have to use the 3500 heads, lower manifol, and plenum. You can't mix and match them really, the only thing that is swapable between the 3400 and the 3500 is the plenum and the heads. But the 3500 lower intake has a different bolt pattern to bolt onto the heads so you can't just use the 3500 heads and then use 3400 lower intake and plenum.

      out of curiosity, i have another question. a 3400 engine is rated for 185hp vs the 3.4's 160hp, but when swapped it's top end onto a 3.4(heads, intake, and plenum), the 3.4 makes 200hp due to its more "aggressive" cam. so what i'm wondering is: the 3500 engine is rated for 201hp, when swapped it's top end onto a 3.4, will the 3.4 make even more horsepower? i'm guessing 210-220hp. hell, if you put the 3500 top end on, then put in an even better cam, adding a turbo or supercharger from there would supposedly give you a damn fast car.

        Yes your logic is very right, that is why the Grand Am guys with the 3400 are starting/experimenting to swapping thier top ends to the 3500.

              So now that I just won an upper intake off ebay from a '01 Grand Am GT 3.4, what else do I need sounds like Heads and Pistons to get a decent start here, what heads just the factory ones off another Grand Am GT? or buy the GM Performance Series 3 heads, or are those the same? And as far as pistons factory ones from a Grand AM?

                if the 3500 top end will in fact fit on a 3.4, does this mean that i will be able to use the pistons from the 3500 engine, or will i still need to get the pistons from a 3400 engine?

                  No, the bore for the 3.4 is 3.62" and the bore for the 3500 is 3.7". You would have to get the bolck bored out, which would be a bit much for this block.

                    I wouldn't be too quick to say that, being guys on 60*V6 are already starting this exact conversion.

                      No, the guys on 60*V6 are swapping the top end from the 3500 not the pistons, they are keeping thier stock 3400 pistons. If they were swapping the pistons then thier compression ratio would be 9.8:1 not 8.9:1.

                          so in order for a 3500 top end swap onto a 3.4 i'll need to find both a 3400 and 3500 engine. the 3400 for the pistons(for a safe compression ratio), and a 3500 for the top end. hot diggity.

                            Well it's not that simple. Yes you will need the 3400 pistons, but you will also want the 3400 fuel rail and injectors or stick with the 3.4 injectors, but either way you will have problems until you get tunig like black34v6 has. The reason you have to use the 3400 rail and injectors is because the 3500 uses the new multec 2 injectors that are longer and the computer won't read them very well, different programing, anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. You also will need to buy the 60mm or 65mm throttle body from 60*v6.com and the adapter plate, because the 3500 has the fly-by-wire.

                            To really get it all down exact you have to combine the research from black34v6 and the research about putting a 3500 top end on the 3400, http://60degreev6.com/showthread.php?t=32908

                              im totally going to do this when i get some money..i think im gunna do the 3500 head swap and if i do i have to combine the 3500 heads with the 3400 pistons and fuel rails right? correct me if im wrong... and oen more question i will need a tune right? and also can the stock tranny and rear end handle 200+hp?

                                Yeah you have to combine the 3500 top end with the 3400 pistons and fuel rail and other things that you will figure out by reading the beginning of this thread and the link that I put up earlier. Yeah you will need a tune but as of right now there really isn't a way to tune the engine unless you go with something like Mega Squirt. And yeah the stock tranny and rear end should hold up.
