Re: Will a turbo kill mileage?

They really don't hurt so much which is why you are starting to see more and more 800+ hp Fbodys and Vettes, that are still maintaining 25mpg on the hiways. Because of the way the power curves work and turbo's work, you arn't really getting all that power unless you are on the gas. They can improve gas millage a little bit when tuned down in under powered cars. Its like towing a car with your blazer with a 2.8L and towing it with a identical blazar with a 4.3L down the hiway at 65mph. The bigger engine even though normally takes more gas has to work 1/2 as hard. But if you left them both stomped down the 4.3 would empty its tank really quick.

I think his calculations on that were a little off, but I can imagine 28-30ish, but not 35 at 90 mph not 35 in a Vette period. Unless he is literally at 800rpm at 90.

Where in new orleans are you at? what kind of car "camaro or bird" do you drive?

Re: Will a turbo kill mileage?

Factory turbo setups are very fuel efficient by design... they're also not very powerful. Take the TDI Jetta's and their base 90hp... very good on gas(diesel) but if you add a turbo to a higher displacement engine you're not going to get better economy ;)

If you drive around not in boost, best you'll muster is about the same as you had... but when I get on the pedal I can see the gas guage drop :) And I have a small T3.

Re: Will a turbo kill mileage?

this is what i know from personal experience...

              I have 3.73 gears and a t70 turbo....

cruising along there is no difference in gas milage before the turbo with the 3.73's but the 2nd your WOT and that turbo is spooled you can basically watch the gas gauge drop

i had a 1/4 of a tank of gas....and i boosted once up untill 90 mph and had to go to the gas station and this was only at 5 PSI with stock injectors, 6:1 FMU and MSD high pressure fuel pump:(

...but is the AFR tuned right?
Now I have an excuse for getting an LS1 instead of a turbo v6.

Re: Will a turbo kill mileage?

i wouldnt say the AFR is tuned perfect...but i did tune it...its 11:7 right now (maybe running a little rich) i will do some more tuning when i get my car back from the shop

why would you wanna get a LS1 when you can create a Turbo 6 and give those LS1 guys a look on their faces like they dont understand whats going on? :)

or even better when you pull up next to a turbo civic revving his Fart cannon at you making the BOV sound like a fat kid with diarria haha...then you look over, give a little smile cause you very well know your turbo'd too and toast em'...ahhhhh what a great feeling cause he very well wont expect getting his doors blown off by a V6...if you have a 8 and he pulls up he obv. knows hes gonna lose so whats the fun in that??

These are passionate arguements. The scientific argument favours the LS1 and always will.

I plan to keep my v6 turbo :)

Well, leading up to the storm I lived in Lakeview. My place was right on top of the 17th street canal, and a block away from the break. :) When I heard the storm was gonna mow New Orleans' lawn, the first thing I thought about was the camaro, which I had only had for 6 months. In fact, the poor thing is still lugging around most of my stuff from the evacuation, because living in an Old Metairie 900 sq. ft. house with parents, three sisters, and one niece doesn't leave me much room to unpack. :) All's well tho. To answer your question, She's a 98, All red, no t-tops. Only things non stock about her are the MSD coils and wires (and I guess you can count splitfire plugs), Magnaflow catback exhaust, and the neat little stainless steel "camaro" inserts in the rear fascia. Whoooole lotta stuff I'd like to do to her, but my money is best spent wisely at this point.

Some guy here in Florida last week stopped at a 711 to get something.
He left his SUV in the parking lot with the engine running (burning $3.00 gas)...some young guy jumped in and took it. Fortunately the police caught the guy and recovered the guys SUV.
If you burn gas only to make the car move forward, you will burn less of it.
Thats not gonna help your gas mileage. It takes more gas to start the car up than have it sitting idling.
Prius and those cars are different because its designed for that purpose.
