Re: Head Questions for the 3.4L 965-4082

It is best to set the valve lash on each cylinder one at a time. I.e. rotate the crank so that the cam is on the base lobe of cylinder 1 intake, set the lash, then rotate the crank until you are on the base lobe of cylinder 1 exhaust. Repeat for each cylinder. You twish the pushrod in your fingers while tightening the rocker arm nut until the point where you feel resistance on the pushrod. Then tighten 1/2 to 3/4 more. I always used 3/4 turn. I will scan the postion of the Chilton's manual that talks about setting valve lash this weekend. It should clear up any questions.

Okay now my eyes are opening.... now when you mean turn the crank you mean the main pulley at the bottom of the motor?..... And when you talk about base lobe what exactly do you mean?

the cam has lobes that push up on the lifter which in turn pushes up on the rocker which pushes down on the valve. you dont want to tighten the rocker down while the cam is in the position to push the valve down. you want it on the base where the rocker is in the rest position.

you want to position the cam to the point where the lifter is in contact with the part labled "base circle." What you can do is find out the firing order or cam timing and see which valves are in the rest position and set the lash on all of those at once, then rotate to the next position and set those.

what else you got for me? lol jk jk

edit-and yes, you will use the harmonic balancer to rotate the engine around.
