Tryna to shave off a little more weight... I got an aftermarket exhaust system, but it is aluminum piping, not stainless steel...Is it still safe for me to remove the heat shields that follow the I-pipe all the way to the back?

      Re: exhaust shielding

Your talking about aluminized steel for your exhaust right? I want to say the only stock heat shield I left on the car was by the gas tank. How much weight do you think that will shed?

ya aluminized steel...a few pounds...but with weight savings its a few lbs here and a few lbs there...will all start to add up... I was thinking of leaving the gas tank heat shield...but I want to take off the shielding all under the passenger side of the car following the I-pipe back...I've heard its ok to do so with an aftermarket system...but I know most systems are stainless steel, and not aluminized steel...so I'm not sure how much my pipes actually hold in the heat...

I'm assuming that you're keeping the cat. If so, I'd leave the shield over that, just in case.

do you live in an area where they do car inspections?

if so, they will probably fail you for having no heat shields

What do they do in canada eh? Here in Texas, as far as the exhaust goes we check for leaks, exit position of tailpipe and presence of converter and muffler given that it was equipped with them from the factory. In the inspection manual a muffler is defined as a device that receives exhaust fumes. Depending on how convincing you are a turbo could possibly get you around having a muffler.

I'm not sure if they look for that...I'll have to find out...I know we do emissions, and some sort of a visual inspection...so ya I need to leave the cat on...but the shielding by the cat you are talking about is actually attached to the cat right? I'm referring more to the shielding attached to the underbody of the car...

                      safety

my car has OBDII so the heat shield has nothing to do with the emissions

im not worried about safety...that only gets done when you sell the car right?
