  • MAF sensor...keeps getting dirty.

Months ago I posted here about how my car would start up, and bog like I had a cam really bad. I knew it couldn't be healthy. That went on for a while, then I through a code for lean fuel/air ratio. I went to the mechanic and that first thing he did was clean the MAF sensor. To my surprise, the bogging literally disappeared. I was glad, even though the guy charged me $150 to find the problem and fix it. So now, months later, I noticed the car beginning to bog slightly again, and today my Dad moved the car out of the driveway and I could hear it bogging pretty loud.

So basically I'm coming to the conclusion that this MAF sensor keeps getting dirty. I have no idea where the sensor is located or how to clean it. If someone could post a picture of the sensor in the engine bay and show me where to clean that would be great. I'd rather not pay another $150 to have it cleaned.

Also, what could be causing the sensor to become dirty?

you have a k and n filter? you could be over oiling it and clogging up the MAF with the oil from that

well maybe that is a problem lol i clean mine about 4 times a year the oil is what stops the dirt maybe lack of oil is allowing gunk to get past it try cleaning your filter?

ouch that might be it, i've had the filter in for well over a year. It doesn't look very dirty though, still I will give it a shot.

I still need to clean the MAF though. I know it's dirty again because the car keeps bogging.

They make maf sensor cleaner in an aerosol can. Just pull your air intake tube off, and spray a little bit into the engine. There is a write up in the how to section on cleaning the throttle body that would probably be more beneficial though.

just make sure you use actual maf cleaner on the maf other stuff (carb cleaner... ect.. can damage it) the only place i have been able to find maf cleaner is advance auto parts...

I just bought the MAF cleaner. Is that the sensor? Where do I spray it?

You clean the wire in the window that faces the air cleaner.

Thanks, sorry for being so novice at this, I don't want to jack anything up.

I just cleaned it, started it up. Bogged a little at first then a little bit more. Maybe from just being cleaned. I'll have to see next time I cold start if it did anything or not.

it shouldn't have bogged from cleaning it i think its another problem =\

I'm pretty sure it is the sensor causing this. I think my whisper lid was not sealed correctly and dirty air was being let in. If it keeps bogging, maybe I just need a new sensor....

if it wasn't sealed and debris got in there and hit the MAF sensor... then it could have damaged it.... that sucks..
