I made a post a little while ago and I don't think people understood what I was talking about. I want to know what the intake filter in these pictures is for. It almost looks like it is meant to supplement the main filter, like when it is clogged.

If this is about the K&N post two people have replied on it. Like Smoke said, thats your air intake system. The K&N sticker says its a washable, reusable K&N filter - but I would pull it out and check just in case. If it is, give it a good cleaning.

So there isn't a square filter beneath the center plastic thing with the emissions sticker? I thought this was some kind of secondary filter element. Heh, I should have just taken it apart.

I would take it apart just so you can understand it. If your talking about the part that is (was) pop riveted to the upper radiator support - that is your intake silencer. If baffles the air (robs a bit of power) in case grandma doesn't want to hear her intake whistle.

On 98+'s, there is. However, you car was made before 1998, so no

Wow, I didn't expect the main filter to be so small, or claim to last 50-100k miles between cleanings.

The stock filter doesn't but someone replaced it with a K&N and when you do that you get that handy dandy sticker to place in the engine bay.
