perhaps you ran over some oil and somehow it got into the filter?

It's the pcv valve for sure.

The Positive Crank case Ventilation (pcv) valve is used to vent gasses form the insides of your engine. Chances are your piston rings are fried and the blow-by is what is creating the pressure in your crank, taking some oil out when it vents back to your intake.

The easy (somewhat illegal) cure is to replace the pcv valve with a crankcase breather filter and plug the hole in the intake. The proper cure is to get new piston rings.

Ya emissions law is fairly strict about them because even though they are basically a filter, they still shoot oil and unburned junk into the air. If you are losing a lot of oil through your pcv it will probably make a big mess of your engine bay.

As for your problem, take it to a mechanic for a check. On a 40k motor I would hope the rings aren't fried. (been using NOS? :) )
