Car will smell like 1972. :) There is a small gain to be had, but modern passenger car cats are simply not as restrictive as they used to be. If you have no emissions, rip it off, if you do, go high flow.

so if you take off the stock cat and just weld in some straight pipe it will sound better?

Heh, i just cut mine off. Beat out the insides and welded it back on. Easier than buying new piping and measuring. I'm sure it could disrupt flow a little bit but eh, I'm pretty positive the catalyst slowed it down a lot more. And yeah, it sounds better for some.. worse for others. I suppose its a matter of opinion. I like it.

                      Re: Question about cats

I actually just did this, prior to the cat swap i had a magnaflow system and it sounded good, but had some rasp too it. I bought a magnaflow high flow cat, and now thre's little or no rasp, and it runs so much smoother, a little better tone too. I would get a high flow cat, with a simulator, and be done with it.

my stock cat went bad on me so i just got a carsound magnaflow.
at first it was pretty loud but once it broke in it quited down.
Didn't need a sim. just get a high flow and be done with it.

                          Re: Question about cats

If you remove your cat you can expect a little less back pressure. Since it may relieve some back pressure, the car will feel a bit weaker down low, and pull more up top due to the torque curve moving up higher in the RPM range. Without a cat the 3.4 sound okay, pretty raspy up top though. With a high-flow cat, it sounds pretty good, probably just as loud, but less raspy.
