  • want to !Smog/AIR

I asked this question on a few threads and no one gave a straight answer. Did a search and can't find anything relevant. My AIR pump doesn't work... the fuse is blown and if i replace it, it blows again. I don't have emissions so I dont care if it works but in my 3rd gen, it used a pump, right off the engine. What this does, is suck air off your intake tube, and push it into your exhaust through exhaust manifolds. Consequently, it fights your intake for air. Also, it pushes more gases through your exhaust. So... by pulling this off, we'd free up intake flow, exhaust flow and if it still is belt driven off the motor, we'd take off more power spinning it by the engine.

Get to the point! So what I want to do, is pull off the pump, metal tubes to the exhaust, and cap off where it connects to the intake. Anyone done this? Will this throw a code? Would it affect driveability in a negative way? I figure if it was going to throw a code it would already be doing it with the fuse blown, but I'm just a "newB."

I had the pump unplugged for awhile to see if it would throw an SES or make any difference to gas mileage. It did neither.

      mine dose the same thing.
just take it all off and plug the hole in your exhaust manifold
I've nevwer failed emissions from not haveing a pump(every car i've had I've taken the worthless thing off)

I'm from IL too and I don't have emissions...? but yea... is the pump driven off the engine? if yes, is there a delete pulley available?

3rd Gens IIRC used a belt-driven pump but the 3.4 and LT1 are electric.

FWIW I do know one 3.4 owner who was required to pass emissions sniff test and had a malfunctioning pump and failed. When he replaced it with a working used unit he barely passed the test.

That sucks for him. Yeah I knew my 3rd gen was belt driven but i havent looked close enough to the 3.4. Maybe the power lost by the UD pulleys will be offset by the power needed for the pump... hehehe I just found an excuse to get the UD pullies, as if i needed one :-) My car probably wouldnt pass any emissions tests, soon to !cat and !AIR. but I'll probably have 29mpg highway because of it.
