  • removing cat question

Ive been wanting to dual my exhaust out for a while now, dualing it at the muffler of course. What would happen if i removed my cat? Ive always heard if a cat is going bad, it will have a bad smell, if i remove my cat, will i have the bad smell all the time? Will i free up any power from removing the cat? Will i get a diffrent sound with the cat removed, i DONT WANT a loud muffler. Thanks

it will be very loud and quite raspy if you remove the cat. you may free up 1-3hp though, but personally, i couldnt justify it for the racket you will make. go with a 3''in inlet and 3'' outlet high flow cat. A high flow cat will make it louder and more mellow sounding, and you will still pick up 1-3hp.

      Re: removing cat question

First of all, if you remove the cat, there will be no bad smell. The smell comes from sulfuric compounds escaping due to the cat failing.

It also shouldn't change the noise level much, especially if you have a stock muffler. I know that when I lost the insides out of my cat, the volume didn't change considerably. The exhaust might become more raspy, though, because you decrease your back pressure by removing the cat.

Like Harrison said, you'll gain a couple hp, but nothing much.

The best advice I can give is:

If you have to worry about passing emissions, either get a new cat, or a high flow cat.

If you don't have to worry, get rid of it.

        Re: removing cat question

i ditched my cat a couple months ago and it sounds fine....noticably louder w/more volume....doesnt sound bad at all......sounds exactly like a v8 at idle and when rollin through parkin lots and such.....not much of a ricey tone at all up top either.
