  • A little bit of help here....

Ok, i've done a search and read about every single topic that includes the word "exhaust" in it, but i still don't understand it.

I'm thinking about getting a new exhaust system put in my bird. I have no previous experience with exhaust systems at all so i know nothing about any of the parts basically.

I've been looking and listening to Flowmasters and Dynomax exhaust since they are around my price range. My question is what all do i need? X pipes, I pipes, Y pipes ? Help, a little stranded here!

For a full exhaust you need a y pipe and a cat back.

Your exhaust system goes something like the following:

        1. Exhaust exits engine cylinder,
        2. Passes through exhaust manifolds,
        3. Gasses from the two exhaust manifolds are merged at the Y-pipe,
        4. Exhaust exits the Y-pipe and goes to the catalytic converter (an emissions control device),
        5. Exhaust exits the catalytic converter (or "cat") and enters the intermediate pipe (or "I-pipe", which includes an "S"-shaped bend at the inlet, which is often referred to by people on this board as an "S-pipe")
        6. Exhaust exits the intermediate pipe behind the rear axle of the car, and enters the muffler,
        7. Gases pass through the muffler, and exit to tailpipe(s)

That is the exhaust system. Some variables can include:
        - Replacing the stock exhaust manifolds with aftermarket headers.
        - Replacing the stock catalytic converter with an aftermarket "high-flow" catalytic converter.
        - Placing a cutout on the exhaust.
        - Having tips after the tailpipes.
        - Replacing the I-pipe with one of larger diameter.
        - Replacing the muffler.

So, you can buy any of these pieces separately, but some types of exhaust "packages" which would be available would be:
        - A "Rear Section": Includes muffler and tailpipes (and sometimes tips).
        - A "Catback": Everything after the catalytic converter (or from the "cat" "back", hence the name.) This includes a muffler and tailpipes/tips, just like a rear section, as well as an intermediate pipe. Some catbacks include the "S-pipe" as part of the intermediate pipe, some do not.

        Does that help?
