Yeah, well I thought I'd chime in with MY !screen experience, as every bit helps. Some have good results, some bad, so here's me:
Removed the c-clip with a soldering iron tip and a screwdriver, same for the screen. Starts up fine, will eventually idle a little lower than before, and shakes at idle. Smell fuel then too.
Also, revs like to hang around 1500 when coming to a stop for some time ... (M5 tranny here). Not sure about that ... Also seems to not like being in gear at 1000-1500 rpms coasting around (parking lot, etc), as it sorta chugga-slams around then.

Not sure what to do. 1: Put it back in. 2: Wait ... 3: reset computer. 4: Mini-AFC 5: screw it, port and polish it. 6: drill the plate

    Thoughts?

mine does the hanging around at 1500 with the screen in and out, i think its supposed to be like that so you can go into gear easier when normal driving...and mine also does that chugga crap when coasting around in a parking lot at that low of RPMs screen in and screen out, i think you have just noticed it more cuz your paying more attention to it and are worried, its a psychological thing...

The high idle thing and gear-hoppin' are, however, totally unacceptable. If it doesn't reset by the end of the weekend (i have a darn autocross sunday morning), back in the screen goes, damaged or not. Wish I'da taken more care when removing it.
I also might have bent something, or opened a vac line -- I was reaching down to remove the rag joint cover (who invented that darn thing anyway), and pushed on all the lines on that side of the engine.
My biggest concern is that, in gear, the engine wants to be at 1700 rpms, not at 1000. What does this mean? I ACCELERATE around parking lots without my foot on the gas. Quite scary, actually. Also can't seem to slwo the car down in gear. Any sorta calibration / drilling I can do?

No issues with this in my 2000 or new 2002

I still think its a straight TB/angled TB issue with the MAF screen.

I dunno, my 96 has a tiny bit of rough idle with the screen out, but other than that...its fine. I have seen NO signs of bad gas mileage with it out either.

If you're revving at 1500-1700 at idle, there is probably a line off somewhere... Or loose or cracked. That's a pretty big change from normal idle.

Shouldn't have to drill the plate, there's already a decent size air passage on the lower left of the plate (looking into the opening of the tb).

Possiblities for a vacuum leak: Egr, Booster, FPR, canister, PCV. That's all I can think of on these cars.
