Octagon's give the highest flow numbers. The 45º degree welds (360º/8) most closely approximate the natural turbidity vortexes in a gas that's 1) heated to exhaust temperatures and 2) flowing through a 2"-3" pipe.
Less disruption implies a more laminar flow, and subsequently, better flow numbers. You can browse for octagonal cat's here.╓
║ Matt M
║ Down with the Sixxness
║ Polo Green 1995 3.8 Camaro
║ intake, cat, catback, shocks, 3.42\'s, and 12\'s in the trunk
╙

Second, you can't exactly rifle an octagonal barrel. Since the bullet can't turn, there's no way to spin it.
Third of all, what part of "2-3 inch pipe" didn't you understand? How does that apply to guns?
Fourth of all, What part of "exhaust gas temperatures" didn't you understand? Exhaust gas temperature for a gasoline 4-cyle engine run around 500-900ºF. The Potassium nitrate in black powder has a decomposition temperature of 400ºF.
Fifth of all, you're an idiot. I know I already said that, but it's worth repeating.
