  • Larger pipes to smaller muffler?

Hey I was just wondering if it makes a difference or hurts perf. when you go from a 3" cat/pipes all the way to the muffler then into a 2.5" system?
I was getting ready to get a 3" system and just realized that the muffler was going to be a 2.5"(super turbo) and figured, well dam is that gonna be a bottle neck, is it worth it etc...etc.etc, also the guy who would be installing it was like, why whats the point of the 3" piping. Just trying to find some opinions from you all.
    Thanks,
    Shane

    IMO, a 3" exhaust isn't needed on a V6 unless you're using a power adder. 2.5 is fine.

Since the exhaust is far cooler at the muffler, a 2.5" inlet muffler is fine if thats all you have.

        lol.. 3" is the ****..

Have you allready purchased the muffler?
becuase there are TONS of good 3" inlet mufflers out there..

the 2.5 shuld work fine.. it just might be a pita to adapt it to the other pipe due to the way our "over the axle" pipe runs into the muffler.. but any good shop shuld be able to take care of that.

I wasnt think so much about the temp as much as the flow, I didnt really think it made much of a difference. Thats why I have to ask the questions. I did alotta searching on the 2.5 vs the 3" system but most of the post were years old, I wanted to see if any of your opinions changed about the 3" system, if its really not worth it? Thanks

Im the one who posted the "Part Numbers for DynoMax Exhaust" post and thats what Im looking into. If its to much of a pain in the a$$ to adapt that stuff than Im not even gonna bother, I cant find a descent mechanic in Miami, so I would want to make life easier abd less painful for myself.

            FWIW:
Here is a dyno with my mods below *EXCLUDING* the 3" Catco Cat and 3" S-Pipe.
            Results: 189.9 RWHP & 223.0 RWTQ

Here is a dyno with my mods below *INCLUDING* the 3" Catco Cat and 3" S-Pipe.
            1st Run (Borla Closed): 194 RWHP & 226 RWTQ
2nd Run (Borla Wide Open): 197 RWHP & 227 RWTQ

Results: 7.5 RWHP and 4 RWTQ gain by adding 3" cat & 3" S-pipe and running open Borla exhaust.

My opinion: Is 3" worth it? Yes. I also feel that you should compliment that 3" piping with a 3" muffler or cutout.

Borla Borla Borla... expensive but then again you cant put a price on a GOOD SOUNDING exhaust system.... aka not just something that wakes up neighbors... I'd try to buy a used borla catback if you can find one though or at least find a good deal because if you buy from borla they royally rape you... try the "garage sale" section at www.tbyrnemotorsports.com

AlltheGoodNames I have not purchased a muffler yet, I was looking into the super turbo but I dont think they have the precise one for our cars in a 3" inlet. If they do could you supply a part number? Thanks

the last one on the list!

I am really starting to like this muffler.. it sounds kinda odd when you realllly get on it.. but they all do.. and it is still breaking in.. and sounding better the more i drive it..

and its the quietest i have heard just cruising.. almost no resonence, unlike the edelbrok and hoe-masters..

my SOTP meter says it likes the new muffler also..

you will need some pipe for tips.. but any exhaust shop can do that up for yah.. they also have flows on that site..

                          good luck,
                          Bill

Thanks AllTheGoodNames, But I really want a dynomax super turbo.
Does Anyone know if the super tubo makes a 3" inlet for our cars, and if so do you have the part number? Thanks Shane

                              http://www.dynomax.com/documents/pas...ral_motors.pdf

there are a few systems that will fit your application..

I dont know where you can get them though..

jegs sells ALOT of dynomax mufflers.. but if you search around you cam probably find them for alot less.
