  • How long to "burn in" a new exhaust system?

i just installed the new flowmaster american thunder cat-back with resonator on my car and was wondering how long til its "burned in"? What exactly is burning in an exhaust? I have read on here that flowmaster sounds better after its been on for a while and been burned in(is this true?), mine sounds really good now, so if it gets better i'll be very happy, and ill get some sound clips up! Not really much 'burning in' to do. About the only thing that burns is the new paint, it smells funny for about a day or so. And that's it. After a long while the sound will change slightly, but I doubt enough that you will ever notice.

I had heard that it was about 500 miles or so and then the sound changed a little. I've had my catback on for 3-4k miles and I never noticed a change.

I would say 500 miles sounds about right. 1500 could be a good answer too, but seems a little high for the "burn in" point. When your exhaust burns in, it is actually the carbon building up inside of the pipes and muffler, and with that you will have a deeper exhaust note. However, it really isn't TOO noticeable, so don't expect any serious changes in the way your car sounds.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm still quite satisfied with the Flows, i know alot of people rag on them, but everyone is entitled to their opinion , and i think that it is a great performing system for the money.

I have the 2 chamber 80 series, same as american thunder but I don't have a resonator. I noticed a slight change in sound after about 1000-1500 miles. Best way to burn it in is drive the car on the interstate for about an hour. Go see ya grandma that lives in another city. ;)
