  • FRA w/o enlarging existing slot

I just did the Free Ram Air mod. Went real well and was super easy using a Dremel tool. The only part that I didn't do because it really looks unnecessary is the enlargement of the slotted opening (approx. 3/4" wide x 20" long) behind the radiator.

Does anyone have a compelling reason why that slot should be enlarged. I guess it doesn't hurt but I don't really think that it would help because It definitely appears that the enlarged openings in the front are where the cool outside air gets in.

Wow, when I took out the air cleaner I was surprised that any air got into the bottom of the box!

Also, I fail to see why the CAI mod would be any more effective. I mean if you look at the way the radiator tilts back, it sort of acts as a scoop in and of itself

I assume that it jst allows more air to enter from underneath the airbox. The stock opening is really small..i would cut it if i were you..

01 has an opening under the lid? Thats wierd cause I know mine didn't have one at all so opening it up made a huge difference. And yeah I don't think the ram air you can buy would make a whole lot of a difference.

Actually, I just did the FRA this weekend, but I didn't do before and after with cutting the slot. I was thinking a similar thing with the slot, but you wouldn;t be able to notice a difference until the summer (well, I am in Buffalo, so it doesn;t get hot until July maybe June) I would think more air is much more important than a few degrees. The density of air changes by 0.0072 lb/ft3 for a 50°F change (from 40 to 90).

Yeah, there was an opening under the lid of my '01. It is a long thin 3/4"W horizontal slot in the plastic piece under the rear of the air box. It couldn't have served any purpose, though before I cut the bottom of the box out.
