  • Free Ram Air question

I did the free ram air and !baffles mods tonight and I had a few small questions about them.

First one, there is a flimsy piece of plastic that is in front of the radiator, can I just yank this whole thing out? I dont see a purpose to it. Or is there some reason for it, it just seems to be blocking air to the engine bay.
And my second question is, what is the point to the big bubbly plastic thing between the air box and throttle body? (that's what it goes into, right?) It goes through the one tube, then into this random thing, and then through another tube into the throttle body. Is this the air silencer thingy that you use the pvc piping for? I didnt wanna replace that in case it served a purpose also. Thanks for the help though, I hope I made sense, if not I can post pictures of what I'm referring to.
Overall, I'm happy I did the mod though. I dont think it really feels much faster, but it seems to climb the rpms quicker, which obviously means it must be going a little quicker. Didnt take long either. ~Jason

On the second question, that IS the air silencer and can be replaced. As for your first question, I'm not sure what part you are talking about, but I don't remember hearing anyone removing plastic near the radiator.

Cool, I guess I'll get some tubing to replace that air silencer in a few more days then. Thanks for the help. I think I'm just gonna leave that other front thing alone. I dont think it's harming anything, so I'll just leave it be. Thanks for the reply.

With that piece out, anyone can pop your hood open from under the car. Not a recommended move IMHO. It's probably there to help increase the velocity of air into the radiator.

Oh, well, then I guess there is a reason for it, haha. I decided to leave it in there anyways. Good luck to anyone ever wishing to get under my car, as I'm have a PITA time just trying to change my oil, but I'll leave it there just in case. Thanks for the info!

There are actually two plastic things. One on top and one on the bottom. They are called radiator shrouds. I've had both of mine out for over a year. I needed to do this for the Super Sucker Ram Air kit. No problems.

Another thing you can do with the air silencer as opposed to removing it is this:

Line the inside of it with something (I used dryer hose) to block the airflow into the lower part, but allow air to flow straight through it. I smoothed it out with duct tape. You can maintain a stock, non-ghetto look in your engine bay while cancelling out the restricting affect of the air silencer. I've got a picture of what I did if you don't understand what I'm talking about.

I was thinking the little plastic things had to be where ram air kits went into. Hopefully I'll get a real ram-air kit sometime this summer and I'll ditch it then.
That dryer vent idea sounds like it would work very well. I still have a bunch leftover too from my last car. Yes, I actually put ram-air on my dodge shadow, haha. I understand what you mean though, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the idea!
