  • Clogged cat?

How bad would a clogged cat dampen performance?, im not sure if mine is, but recently a few times i smelt catalyst..

also, what should i do about replacing? everyone says a highflow can trip the SES, and I DONT want that, cause from what ive studied, when SES is on, the computer goes into a failsafe mode and can get worst gas mileage?

you don't have to worry about ses with a 3.4L. these cars come with no catalyst efficiecy monitor. besides, the high-flow cats only rarely set codes... its running gutted or no cats that do this on OBD-II systems.

and yes, clogged cat will damage performance.

fyi, the mfgr is required by epa to warranty catalytic converter for 8 yrs or 80k miles. if you have a low-mileage 3.4 you may qualify...

64,500 miles, but would it be worth getting a highflow? or just a manufacture replacement?

        free sounds good to me.
a lot of places won't weld a hi-flow in place of OEM if the OEM is still covered under the EPA mandated warranty. if you decide to go with the high-flow, you may have to do it yourself with a pipe cutter of some sort, some exh adapters and some u-bolts. easy enough.

check for restricted cat by looking at temp before and after cat. should be at least 100degF hotter after cat if it is functional and not clogged. this is at operational temp, of course.

you can also check exh sys restrictions by checking engine vacuum and doing a "snap-throttle" test to watch vacuum response.

Strange_Trp: can you go into a little more detail on the "snap-throttle" test? How do I do this test? What tools are needed? Thanks.

Much cheaper to get a catco high flow cat. $60 shipped. I replaced mine around 70k miles and when I took the old one off and shook it, everything inside was free to move around. I think 65-70k is as long as the stock cats last. It started to rattle also, thats how I knew it was done.
