  • which one should i get?

I am going to purchase a flowmaster muffler from ebay. they have many options, they have the 40, 50, and 80 series. Which one should i get?
I have seen many members with 80 series, is that the best set up?
are there any other sizes for the 80 series or are they all like 2.5 or so?
any other options you guys want to recommend? thanks

I have the 80 series on my car and I have to agree that it sounds pretty ricey above 3500 RPM's. If I had to do it again I would have saved the money on the muffler and just waited to get a catback.

I HAD JUST A PLAIN FLOWMASTER MUFFLER WITH 2.5 IN INLET AND DUAL 2.5 IN OUTLETS ON STOCK TUBING AND THEIR WAS NO RICE ONLY WHEN REVING IN NEUTRAL PAST 3k.
I JUST UPGRADED TO A FULL 3" CUSTOM CATBACK AND IT SOUNDS GOD ENOUGH FOR ME, NO RICE WHEN REVING IN NEUTRAL ANY MORE AND 2 COWORKERS SAID IT SOUNDED ALOT BETTER. CHECK MY WEBPAGE FOR PICS AND DETAILS, YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED, TRUST ME I WAS NERVOUS ABOUT GETTING A FLOWMASTER MUFFLER CAUSE OF ALL THE TALK OF RASP, AND I THINK IT WAS A WASTE OF TIME AND ALLOT OF STRESS, JUST GO WITH THIS SETUP AND YOU'LL BE HAPPY.

the 40 and 50 come in different setups, and the 80 is a direct replacement, i have the 80 series also, CIA headers, cutout(inplace of cat), 2.75" pipe, flow 80 series 3" in 2.5" out, slp dual dual tips... sounds badass, except for my freakin egr leak, but it will soon be fixed...

I got a magnaflow cat back system brand new off of ebay for 230.00 It sounds vveerryyy nice. I get asked if its a v8 in my car alot. It has a very nice deep tone to it at idle. It does pop when your reving in nutral. Other than that it sounds great. If you do get the magnaflow setup make sure to get the full cat back system, i head just the muffler sucks. And after you get it installed give it some time to get broken in, it wont sound that great when you first get it on but give it time and itll get alot better.

sorry for being an idiot but what does catback system mean? i thought all it was , was just the muffler, tips, and pipes that those systems include, or am i missing something??
i was just planning on putting on the muffler with pipin gthe shop gives me which would be the size of the inlets, abut 2.5 or so, buy tips from them or just online, and then get a CATCO catalytic converter, so in other words my custom exhaust. Any components missing??
and I dont have the money for headers thast why i am not getting them yet.

a catback on our cars is from the end of the s-pipe to the tips (i think there was one system that included the spipe but i cant remember what it was). id suggest just getting a 2.75 inch i pipe and over axle pipe from a v8 owner. an 80 series muffler, a 3 inch spipe (upipe from jegs cut in half... do a search) and a 3 inch catco cat. no rice for me, unless you count neutral.

I would not allow a shop to make the pipes for you unless they can make mandrel bent ones and then the cost would probably be more than you could buy the pipes pre built for anyway. 1st they will probably charge you a pretty penny saying its alotta custom work..blaa..blaa..blaa, and if they dont have the capabilities to make mandrel bent pipes its not going to flow well at all, you'd probably be better off with the stock tubing.
I have done free intake mods plus a K&N air filter, but putting on my 3" exhaust was by far the best mod yet. Thier is absolutely NO loss in low end torque and the car accelerates so much more rapidly and smoothly. Its not a super seat of the pants mod but you can definately feel how much the car benefited from the exhaust, well I cant just say the exhaust but the engines overall better breathing.
Plus I am getting almost 65 miles per quarter tank in the city of miami, which is OUTSTANDING in bumper to bumper traffic!
Im not trying to push anything on you or tell how you should go about doing your mods but I would wait until you have all your exhaust parts together to have them installed, not only to save you some bucks but also to ensure proper measurement and placement of all the components. It just makes it easier.
Sorry for the super long post just wanted to provide you with some info. Feel free to email @ 72chevelle454@earthlink.net if you ANY questions, I'm no pro so I might not be able to answer everything but I have been in your shoes recently and would like to see things go a little smoother for you than they did me.
Enjoy your new exhaust whatever it may be!
                    Shane
P.S. Total Cost of my cat back was:
                    $50 for the cat
                    $41 for the I-pipe
$49 for the Over axle pipe
                    $42 for the s-pipe
                    $70 for the muffler
                    $40 for the tips
for a Grand total of 292 plus the installation which wouldnt be accurate since I had my exhaust installed 2 different times .

I'm sorry i'm gonna have to go against this. While it might be cheaper, I wouldn't get any used pipe, they might of hacked it off in some weird place, or it could be all rusted up. Even if you did it still isn't mandrel bent, you might as well just get a shop to make you one if thats the case. Most shops won't even weld used pipes back on your car, don't dig yourself in a hole.

Now, if your going mufflers vs. mufflers, everyone is going to get raspy in some way or another. The mufflers like dynomax are often a little bit louder then stock, to anyone on the road, it would probably still sound stock, except to you. The chambered mufflers like the flowmaster are going to be a little bit louder on the low end and have a nice rumble to them, but when your driving it will maximize the ricey sound everyone describes. It's more like a wah type drone sound.

Next, if your going to get into catbacks. Any catback is going to sound nice, i've heard many catbacks and there is a few ways you can go. 3inch is going to give you the best sound you can get, the 2.5ones don't sound as good. Not just because I have it, but a flowmaster 3 inch system mated with a high flow cat, is the best way to go IMO. I haven't heard anything that comes near it. Most soundclips don't do it justice, on anything. You and I know that what you hear in real life is so different then what you hear on the computers.
