  • Why are aftermarket cats illegal in California?

My cat is dying and I need a new cat. I wanted to get an aftermarket Hi Flo, but it's illegal in Cali. If I buy it and put it on anyways, nothing will happen right? No SES?

The only problem I see is people who aren't willing to install and smogging.

It's illegal because accoring to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) code book, it says that all aftermarket catalytic conveters installed on OBDII vehicles model years 1995+ must meet certain requirements. Unfortunately, these requirements have not yet been written, so currently all aftermarket converters are illegal for said vehicles.

And yes, the car will run just fine. It's just those damn CARB people. Also, you can be failed on visual inspection when you go to smog your car if they notice that it's a highflow cat, so don't go to test-only stations.

I have the same ****ing problem, live in cali and no one will install my hi-flo cat.. I found one place but they want like 70 bucks or something

the car must have 60,000mi+ on it, or be below a '95 or have a damaged cat. Either find a place that will do it (you'll eventually find one) or take off your I-pipe, and bring it in and have the cat welded onto it, say its for a 94 fbody
\'02 firebird 5spd manual (pewter)<br />mods: whisper lid, spintech muffer with 3\" piping, strut tower brace, \"free ram air\", k&n filter, SLP CAI - next mods: jetchip stage II, lowering springs
