I was still having problems with hesitation and power loss and then all of a sudden from a start she starts loping and surging and not even enough power to move. I stall in the middle of the road until I can inch it into a parking lot. I spent about 45 minutes trying to get it running, tried bybassing dis-4, playing with different fuel pressures, blocking off EGR thinking it was sticking open, nothing worked. At idle it surges btwn 800 and 1300 rpm very eratically. Another thing that is scary is that there is only 10 inches/Hg at that range. I have a boost/vaccume gauge installed and that's all I'm showing. Usually it's at 20 at idle or with the throttle closed. Makes me think something is wrong in the combustion chambers. What does anyone think? I'll try to work on it more once I tow it home.

Well I found the problem. I am now a full advocate of gutting cats. My cat converter was clogged and that was what my problem was. A chunk big enough to plug the exit hole of the cat was wedge in, making it nearly impossible for any exhaust to escape. I took it off and ran a tire iron and re-bar into it with a hammer and got every little last bit out. My car now runs beautifly. Acceleration is back if not improved. I highly recomend this stick and hammer remedy for any one with a high mileage motor like mine(172,000). Cats are the devil...

      Cats are the devil?

I'm glad you fixed your acceleration problems, but for the love of mother earth, please replace it with another cat, or a high-flow one.

We'll all breathe easier because of it.

Mother Earth? Us republicans down here in Texas have never heard of such a thing ;) Do you wanna go fast or not? No, I'll probably put a high flow one in if I can find one at a good price, and after I put the turbo on.

          Is it the original?

I am thinking of replacing mine, its the second one on my car but run sometime with no i-pipe or muffler and all of a sudden recently my exhaust sounds really really raspy, metal virating. I think the cat is breaking itslef apart. Sounds like my muffler used to, when it went out.

Yes, it was original. Recently at idle and when coming down from a rev I could hear ocastional rattiling like metal on metal ratteling. It was from chunks rateling around inside the cat. If you want to go to the trouble you could take the cat off or at least the rear joint and stick you fingers in there and see if the pieces move around.

Probably the fastest my car ever ran was when it was clogged and I drilled and pried a hole in the bottom to get it home. Would have kept it like that too but it had a really loud whoosing sound that got kind of annoying...............
