  • This ever happen to any of you?

Today my wife came home early from school, so I could, for the first time in a few months, drive the camaro back to work (after lunch). I hadn't even made it two miles when the serpentine belt broke at one of the grooves. This frayed piece of belt, spinning around the engine bay, decided to break my oil sending unit in half. Luckily one of my buddies from work saw me and followed me to the nearest gas station where I parked it till after work. I drove it home, hopped in the rx7 and picked up a gaterback belt and new sensor. Man was it hot today replacing those parts. +102* temp plus an o-zone warning for our area!

lol, you're probably thinking of a different one then I have. It's an '86 na beater that I picked up for $800 with a trashed interior, cracked windshield, non-functional a/c, etc. but it gets me to and from work :D

that exact thing happened to me on the highway, it tore oil sensor in half and ripped up insulation on top of hood, i drove it slowly home with half of the grooves gone on the belt. i bought a new belt, but decided to let the oil sending unit go a few days b/c i didnt think it would hurt anything. then the piece of film gave way that was exposed from the broken sending unit. luckily it was in my driveway, i didnt know that piece of film was all that was keeping my oil from spilling out of my engine.

replace the serp belt every 30,000 miles (or 2 years whichever comes first). you cant tell the condition of the belt by examination. keep the old belt in the car as a spare just in case you need to use it for a few miles during an unfortunate episode...

I would aslo check the idler pulley (tensioner). The bearing in mine froze up, which caused the belt to break.

that's the problem with serp belts. they will show cracks but that doesnt mean the belt is worn out. atleast cracks across the ribs are normal. cracks along the ribs are "bad".
