  • Engine running temp. question ?!?!?!?

My car is running at like 215 - 220. I asked my mechanic what temp I should be running at and he said around 190 - 210. Any advice on why it's running this hot?

Also does the 160 degree thermostat really help out or does it just make it run cooler???

    Thanks for the help.
    Travis.

I spoke with a guy at Autozone and he recommended not going with a 160 thermo unless you had a computer programmer chip to adjust your computer settings.

If the car is at a standstill, it's normal for it to get up to 210. However, when you're driving, it should pretty much stay around 180 on the gauge (since the fan would be on). If it's above 180 when you're driving, could be a number of things.

              I don't remember the years, but some have 195 degree thermo's. Some have 180 (I think it's the 3.4 or LS1's).

im pretty sure mine has a 195. it stays like i said right below 210 on the factory gauge. but i bought a 180 yesterday but haven't had time to put it in yet, so i will see if it makes a difference!

                      All 4th gen V6's came with a 195º thermostat.
                      1993 - 1997 LT1's came with a 195º thermostat.
                      1998+ LS1's came with a 180º thermostat.

FWIW: The temp gauge on the dash is very inaccurate. I can measure a 172º reading from Autotap but yet the gauge reads near 210º in the dash. Do not trust the dash gauge.

i just put the 180 in and my gauge hardly moved at all. i know it is inacurate but i still would have thought it would have moved more than it did. i can barely tell it moved!
