  • Aftermarket Coils: MSD vs. ACCEL

Can anyone offer an opinion on either one? I plan on replacing mine in the near future and am leaning toward the MSD. Someone posted that ACCEL coils are notoriously bad for our cars, can anyone back this up?
I think the MSD Coils are pretty new, I just saw them in the new Summit catalog. Does anyone have them?

    The p/n is: MSD-8224

    Thanks for the input.

    -Chris

I've been running Accel Coils for about a month. Not a single complaint.

But I wouldn't run aftermarket coils with the msd dis-4. Thats an expensive mistake.

I'm not planning on getting the MSD DIS-4 box.
Just want a new set of coils.
Trying to find out which ones are best.

Just curious, why not? Please keep me from making a mistake because I'm waiting on the MSD coils to hit summit, and I already have the box.

I have the MSD DIS-4 box with Accel coils and have blown 3 Accel coils already. They worked fine before I put the MSD box on, but now I have blown 3 in the past 4 months. I am planning on switching to the MSD coils ASAP but I am running stock coils right now and they seem fine.

I know that 96Beastv6 has problems w/ his accels. The motor would miss in the higher RPM's. I'm looking foward to the MSD coils. Now I know not to get a box in the future. I wonder if the MSD coils would work properly w/ the MSD DIS4?

Correct, I was having problems with my Accell coils. Anytime the engine was under heavy load when it was hot outside (as it ALWAYS is in FL) I would get misfires. It would also misfire even under moderate load at in the upper rpms, like RiceCooker said. I went back to stock coils when I started spraying and haven't had a misfire since. One thing I do notice in this thread though, take a look at the regions that people are at where the Accels are working fine: North Carolina, New York, Delaware, Kentucky. You see the pattern there? All northern areas where there are actually real seasons and it's not hot ALL the time. I think that may be the key to the Accel problems.

I've been wondering the same thing. Seems like MSD would make sure the two would work together.

Well, they advertise like the two would work together, so I'm gonna go ahead and order them when they're available. I already have the ignition.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to order the MSD's soon. I checked with summit and they are on backorder, if you order them today they say they will ship on 5/15.

I rarely have problems with my Accel's and it is often 100°+ here in Kansas.
