          lol
I've had some very VERY bad experiences with oreillys clerks telling me to put RTV on head gaskets and stupid things like that

Your car will be fine with 10w40, but it won't stop your leak, or slow it down noticably at all.

You may experience problems when using a thicker oil and should strictly follow the manufactures recommendations.

I think that some of you all didn't really answer the guy question but criticize the clerk, now I think the clerk is trying to say that the thicker oil wil flow slower and the thicker oil would be better, which I think is wrong the clerk should also try to sell him Oil seals or gaskets where ever the oil is leaking from and not try to stop a problem without dealing with the real problem, cause it can only get worst.
I use 20-50W in my car.

                    is this a joke?

it will slow the leak down.

it wont really slow the leak. only thing it might do is cause slug over time clogging the leak and other stuff

Dump a quart of lucas in. after 2 quarts of lucas my friends 88 nissan that leaked oil BAD (he had to add 1-2 quarts every days) is down to adding about a quart every 2 weeks. Dont believe the bs about lucas being bad for your motor/oil pump. It wont hurt a thing.

nah, it intelligently selects leaking gaskets to seal instead of engine parts and oil passages

                            No it won't.
10-40 is not really much thicker than 10-30.
At room temps and cold weather, they both act like 10 weight oil.
Changing oil viscosity or adding those sealers is a terrible idea. Just fix the leak.
