  • Engine Problem...Please Help

    Alright here's the deal...

I drove around all day today and the car was perfectly fine. I go to leave Taco Bell tonight and I started my car and it started real slow at first. Then it started jerking and making a noise like I keep revving the engine (except not as loud as if i were to, just a low rumble...it was like sputtering). I've had a problem before where if I take it through a car wash the car shakes a little (once I turn it off and restart it the shaking stops) and my service engine soon light comes on, but goes off once the car dries out. It rained all day today and my car was in the rain from 7:00-11:00. Could that be the problem? It's only when the car is idling. I had to drive it home and it was fine when I was driving, but if I hit a red light and I had to stop the car would jerk like crazy. My friend noticed when I stopped the car the battery charge would move down to in red or just outside of it. My oil pressure was a little low. The temperature was normal. I looked at the engine (I really don't know much at all, so it didn't help) and noticed one of the pulleys was moving up and down weird. It definetely wasn't normal.

I'm just lookin for some input to see what the problem could possibly be.

Oh yeah...the car's a 1998 3.8L V6 Camaro. It has about $93,000 miles on it...and the only engine mods is a K&N air filter and Whisper Lid. Aftermarket exhaust too (Flowmaster American Thunder). Just thought I'd give some details if it can help any.

    Thanks to anyone that helps!

well the battery light, idicates to me that your alternator is bad, also why you had a slow start up.

        What will that tell me?

I talked to a friend that knows a lot about cars and has a Trans Am...and he said it sounds like the ECU to him. That he had the same problem when it rained. It's been raining for 3 days here..even if the car's in the garage with all the moisture he thinks the ECU got wet and made everything act up like that. Hopefully tomorrow morning the car starts normal after drying out all night.

un plugging the battery will let the car run solely on the alternator. If the car dies, your alt is no good.

ECU? maybe...but the alt test is easier than buying a new ECU.

Alright, I'll try that tomorrow. No I won't have to buy a new ECU. Just let it dry out and then the car should run fine. I'll just have to reseal around the ECU so it won't get wet again. Not good if I get problems like this if it just rains. Thanks for your help.

Well I tried starting the car this morning and it won't even start now. It sputters then goes out. We tried jumping it and at first it sounded like it would start. It sounded like I kept hitting the gas about 5 times, but then sputtered out once again. I have no idea whats wrong, because if it were the alternator wouldn't the car at least start when the battery gets charged?

yea, unless your battery is ****ed as well. But it should still be good with a charge. Sounds like you may have some more serious problems, unfortunately.

even a good alternator wont charge a DEAD battery, nothing does from my experience... if your battery is dead... it dead! you should be able to start it with a jump though and itll run with a good alternator, but then as soon as the car goes off again you will have nothing. that was my experience with my 93 caprice 9C-1
