  • Exhaust in the intake....

I did some searching, didnt find anything, but maybe that's because I'm a little lost on this one...

I have a 96 3.8 firebird...and there is exhaust backing up out of my intake...to the point that there is not enough air getting into the mixture. My suspicion would be EGR related, since it is what pumps exhaust back into the intake...like, perhaps the valve stuck open? but I get no codes...

So, any help anyone has to offer is greatly appreciated! I have to get this thing fixed ASAP, as it is my only vehicle...so thanks in advance!

well, you can hear it in the throttle body, sort of almost like a gurgling sound, and then, if you take the air filter housing off, exhaust comes out the intake...

take the egr valve hose off the intake, cover the intake hole with duct tape, start engine. If engine runs better, and or if exhaust in coming out of that egr hose, you know thats your problem. By the way i think the gurgling sound is just the air moving through the the filter making its way up to the intake.

I will try that and see what happens. As for the gurgling sort of noise, it comes from the area of the throttle body, and only started when this issue started, so....

Well, I tried the deal with the duct tape...not noticing any exhaust out the intake now, though I didnt run the car for very long, but still have a problem with the air/fuel mix...the car fails to idle for more than a minute, and there is a strong fuel smell once it dies.

Well, it sounds like its not your egr valve then. How long have you had this problem, has it been getting worse? It sounds like your car is flooding. How long has it been doing this? Do you have a SES light. Could of you have a bad fuel injector, or could your fuel pressure regular be leaking back into the intake? Id get a fuel pressure tester and see if the fuel pressure drops after the car is turned off.

This problem just sort of came up, out of the blue, in the last week or so...It seems to get better right after I get gas, though it doesnt last for very long, and then after the car has been running for 30 mins or so...
No SES lights. Are there any certain things to look for, to tell if the FPR is leaking? When I got this car, the vacuum hose to the FPR was missing...right now, it just has some generic rubber hose on it...could this be causing the problem?
I definately agree it is flooding...at first, with the exhaust in the intake issue, I was thinking it just might not be getting enough air into the mix, and thus the fuel smell...but I agree now that I think it is a matter of too much fuel...

If your FPR just has a "generic rubber hose" on it, check to be sure it is not collapsing under vacuum. You may need hose designed for vacuum.

it's a bad exhaust or intake valve . run compresion on all cylinders / find the low one . take the valve cover off make sure to have both valves closed run compressed air into the cylinder listen for thew hissing .
