take off the panel where the shifter is, you will notice a black cable that is connected to the shifter, move it arond. And then try again, this happened to me before it took me like 30 min to make it shift out of park though.

Just a guess, but maybe your brake/park interlock broke. I don't think F-bodies have an override either.

I couldn't get the panel off. I usually take it off when its in 1st gear with the emergency brake on, but since its in park, i cant wiggle it out at all.

there is a little switch that tells when the brake pedal is pressed in , this may be malfucntioning , if you can get your hands on a scan tool, hook it up and see if pressing the brake pedal shows up on the scantool , if the switch isnt working then the car will not let you shift out of park

I had the same problem on my '98....couldn't even push the button on the shifter in. It turned out to be the shift interlock (as 02PewterBird suggested). I just removed mine and it worked fine after that. I don't know if that's what's going on with your car but it's worth looking into.

probably the switch they are talking about.

also the Neutral Safety Switch, if thats not the same thing.....

that tells the shifter that the break is pushed in so you can shift from park.

if its bad, its like $9 to replace. its a white horseshoe thing with circuits on it.

Were you able to fix the problem?

my brother had the same problem, took us about 5 or 6 minutes of pushing the button for it to start working. It is a 97 camaro, any of those solutions work?? any guides on how to replace that switch because that has to be the problem, we thought it was the button stuck and put oil in it but that is not the problem, thanks.

no , the neutral safter switch allows the car to be started only when in park and in nuteral, so it prevents you from starting the car when in gear
