• Converted headlights to H4...problems arise

Well, here's the deal. About a week ago, I had one of my headlights burn out, upon this happening I realized it was a sealed beam unit. This meant I would have to buy the whole sealed beam to replace the bad one. Instead, I decided it would make more sense in the long run to get an H4 headlight conversion kit, which made it so that I could use H4 bulbs which could be easily switched into and out of the housing if they ever burnt out. Today, I got everything installed at a local car customizing shop.

Once I began driving at night, something was really wrong. The low beams, if you can even call them that barely light up. The high beams light up the road a little better, but don't reach far and don't "spread" out the light like a high beam should. Also, now, whenever my lowbeams are on, the "high beam" signal on my cluster lights up, very dimly and flickers. When high beams are on, it comes on full brightness and is normal. What could this be from? Is this all related to replacing the old connector plug and splicing in an H4 connector plug? Could it just mean wires are spliced into the wrong places? I'm pretty pissed off because I thought this would really help out my lighting situation and help me out in the future.

I'm taking it back tomorrow to hear from them, but in the mean time I just wanted to know what any of you guys think it might be?

Just to show examples, below are links to some pictures I took of them on at night time.

heh, ive been going through this problem for the last year. What type of buld and conversion kit did you get? I got the toucan kit and the h4 connectors and some ultra high blue bulbs.

Origionally i had lowbeams as a orangish/yellowish color that lit up nothing. The highbeams would be really bright blue. and the indicator light would flicker like you are saying.

then i correctly connected the wires and i am still left with problems.

currntly i have the reversed indicator light like you are saying. This is when the highbeam indicator light is on with the lowbeams and it shuts off with the highbeams. I am now getting much better lighting with the bulbs now that they are correctly connected but it still seems like something is missing. I cant see how our cars suck with these bulbs but if you put them in another type of car they work great.

Well its late now, so tommorrow ill find out exactly how i have my wires connected but like i said, there are still some problems and i hope someone can figure them out.

Maybe a wire shorting to ground? Crazy questions, but are your tachs working okay? Not sure about 4th gens, but on some models everything runs throung the tach and if it goes then there can be serious problems.

I had this same exact problem when I did the same thing to my 2 3rd gens I had a few years ago. I remember something like a relay or something was needed. If I remember right, the H4 bulb was dual filimented and this was why it was messing up. Picture a car with a single bulb as the headlights. 1 filiment is for the low beams, and the other filiment is for the high beams. You're trying to use a dual filiment bulb for a single light. When posting about it on thirdgen.org, someone with the same problem told me to just disconnect the high beams If I didn't need them. I did just that. After that, the high beam indicator light went away, and I just left the lights on the brighter of the 2 lights. Hope I helped some.
