• My car doesn't power brake!

This has been bothering me for a long time. Every time i try to power brake, my car just doesn't move, u can hear it trying to but the brakes just hold on with all their might. What's wrong with my car. i've seen other supposedly stock firebirds do it, and its not just me cuz friends have tried to powerbrake in my car too and they can't. racing i do fine, have only lost to one other bird. it's not that i want to be powerbraking all the time, its just that mine doesn't do it and i'm scared something might be really wrong.
if anyone has any ideas please post.

maybe give this a shot:

1) Mash the break
2) Ease the gas to like 4000 rpm
3) Slowly ease off the break

if that fails, try this:

1) Pull up to any wall
2) Ease nose of car against wall at a 90 degree angle
3) Mash gas

It sounds like your trans is slipping to me. If you lose any line pressure or your forward frictions are a little burned, you will not be able to power brake (or power brake well). When is the last time you changed the trans fluid? What was it's color, texture, etc? What's the mileage on the car?

Cause it's a 6-banger.

Being a 6-banger has nothing to do with it. The torque convertor reachs a were torque transferred through it exceeds the brake pressure and the car moves forward. This is called the stall speed of the convertor. Even if he a had a 4,500 stall convertor in the car, the car would eventually move forward. It may not burn the tires but the engine's torque output will exceed the clamping force of the brakes. Unless there is a problem with the power transfer, ie torque convertor, trans, driveaxle problems.

i have the same problem, to a lesser degree i think... but i got the trans fluid changed 10k miles ago and i didn't do it myself (doh!) so i haven't the foggiest clue what it looked like... what should i do?

you may just be hitting the brake a little too hard you don't have to stomp it just apply enough pressure that you don't move forward at idle then begin to give it gas and if it begins to lurch forward then apply brakes slowly till you don't

My car is a 96 Bird all stock with an auto and 3.08's. Put the brake to the floor, hit the gas like mid way and start letting off the brake until you feel the tire(s)break loose. Even with my open rear end i can usually leave 2 black strips

Although I don't recommend this, I know it works. First, Get some momentum in reverse. You have to time this right to get it to work. Throw it in drive and hit the gas at the same time. About a half second later, after the tires have started to spin, press the brake. It'll be a lot harder for the brakes to stop the wheels once they have begun spinning. Works every time ;)

Why is it so important to you that you can power brake?
