Amsoil 0w-30 motor oil

Usually I use mobil 1 10w-30 in my engine.

I had to replace my oil pan gasket this weekend, and all we had in our shop was amsoil 0w-30, so I went ahead and used it.

I was weary of using it at first, but my aircraft mechanic friend convinced me that it is good stuff. He swears it hardlyever has to be changed, but I don't believe that.

DOes anyone know anything about amsoil or 0w-30 motor oil? I am still kind of scared that my engine will lock up since it is so thin. So far it is running just fine though.

Amsoil is a good brand but yeah, I dont think its a good idea to use something other than 10w-30

In the '98 Camaro owners manual it states you can use 0w30 ,if the temp. in your area can get to(-20f*).This is true for 8's or6's.In n.w. IN. we can get into that range several times a year, so in dec.- mar. I use mobil1 0w30.I have a '98 camaro w/3.8.& never had a problem, & did this since the car was new.In your area I doubt it would get that cold so after this oil change I'd stick to the recommened viscosities.But, I know my brother who is a petrochemical engineer,& worked in the lubrication div. for premcor refineries, put 0w30 all year round in his cars.He would agree with your mech.,after anylizing things I don't have expertize on, like ceta stokes & specific gravity etc.,he concluded that mobil 1 0w30 could actually keep a higher viscosity than 5w30.,& be very close to a 10w30.I'm sure Amsoil is pretty close to M1,& I have heard they buy a lot of their components from mobil , so I would'nt be worried about a change untill some really hot wheather rolls in.Also if the oil meets GM spec. 4718M then its good enough for the Corv. LS1& 6,& I really would be at ease.BTW my brother lives in Tampa & 2 of his Fords(yea he's a FORD man, & don't know why)have well over 100k on 'em & don't use oil ,I guess that could be a testement for 0w30 especally in that heat soaked area!His cars recomended 10w 30 or 5w30,so in summary I would'nt get my pan & drain plug wrench out for a while.
