Y87 sport steering ratio (14.4:1 vs. the regular 16.9:1)

is the Y87 sport steering lighter,heavier than standard?
Is it a such choice because Y87 've got larger tires (235/55R16) ?
Is there a RPO code for the sport steering ratio moreover the Y87 ?
(The only thing I know is that you never know: the european version got RPO U80 standard : Zexen Torsen)

Is to a good choice to upgrade the steering box?

It is "quicker", and was standard on the V8 cars. The simplest way is to replace the entire rack. The Y87 package included the V8 steering rack, there is no RPO just for the rack.

There is no "steering box" on a F-body, it is a steering rack.

I wanted to know where was that box...

I can't speak for the difference in the ratios, but I would assume unless you are planning autocross or something along the lines the tighter steering has no true advantage. I'm sure it has its pluses and minuses for every aspect though.

As for the install, it is not a major pain. I wrote up a how too not long ago. Gives all the tools needed and pretty much step by step instructions, no pictures sorry. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined it can be done with relative ease in a few hours or less.

I wish I had it. My Camaro takes 50 acres to make a U-turn. And parking lots are a PITA! It's a 97 non-tight steering ratio btw...

The rack doesn't change the turning circle. That's set by the wheelbase and how much clearance the front wheels have.

The ratio determines how many turns of the steering wheel it takes to turn the tires. ;) It takes more turns of the steering wheel for us to do a full lock-to-lock than it does a V8 rack.

Jason is right.


Y87 & V8 racks are the same. If you don't have the Y87 RPO code, then you have the "non-tight" :D steering rack.

& i think when ppl were discussing that "steering box" they were talking about the power steering fluid reservoir.
