A bolt on uses the same hinges, bolts, etc that your stock hood does and opens up the same way. Pop the latch, the hood opens up, bada bing bada boom.

A pin on hood does not use all of this stuff. A pin on hood is usually lighter and cheaper, and instead of using the stock hinges, etc. it uses a couple pins to hold it in place. Ever seen a car that has those two silver circle on the front part of the hood? Those are the pins holding the hood down. When you want to take a look under the hood, you have to undo those pins and take the entire hood off.

    Hope that answered your question.

yeah it did ... thanks.... seems like a pin on hood would be better for a person running a tack only car... and a bolt on would be for show car.... Thanks for the very descriptive help..

I disagree -- a bolt on hood uses the factory rear brackets and front hold-down, and many folks who choose lighter hoods go with a pair of hood pins to prevent fly-off at high speeds.

A "pin-on" hood has dzus fasteners all the way around front, sides, and back (like 15 or 20), and is not held on with brackets or releases or other stuff. A pin-on is not particularly a street hood, and it will cost you an arm and a leg for the install, since pin-on hoods generally have large overlap tolerances to allow for a little massaging for the pins.
