Gear drive?!? LoL That would be cool.. But I have that same sound, I can hear it at idle also, sounds like it is coming from the altenator..? Very odd.

it's proably from the free ram air mod.. it's just the sound of the motor sucking air..

98 Firebird - gone from mod mode to keep it running and useable mode.

a long screwdriver works wonderfully do diagnose a bad accessory shaft bearing (like alternator, etc).
it also helps to rule out intake noise.

yes, all you do is take the long screw driver, put it on the things in the engine, and put ur ear at the end of the screwdriver maybe someone put turbo when u were sleeping? :D

Could be power steering pump going out, idler pulley bearings, alternator bearings, etc. Just use the screwdriver technique and you should find it.

check out your belt and alternator. Clean your belt off or replace it and see what happens.

no, I get this too
I thought it was from my ram air intake rubbing against the radiator or something. I dont know what it is, but if you're in drive and just drifting forward and stick it in neautral you can get the same noise but at a higher RPM. I dunno, maybe the rev limiter. I have found that mine only makes the noise after I let off the gas, and the RPMs are decreasing from what the rev limiter holds them at.
