There are a number of different solenoids on cars. For example, the starter solenoid. It basically, and correct me if I'm explaining this poorly, governs when and how much current flows through an electrical system. So when the starter solenoid gets the signal, it sends through some current to the starter and that in turns cranks over your car. They are the same in nitrous systems, the solenoid there however controls the nitrous flow.

Its a control that moves something when electricity is supplied to it. The starter solenoid is used to kick the starter gear out to the flywheel when you start the car, and let it kick back out when you let go of the key. The egr valve is controlled by a solenoid to let varying amounts of exhaust gas flow back into the intake.

They work because of an electromagnet (a coil of wire) that becomes magnetic when electricity is passed through it. The electromagnet moves a shaft inside the coil back and forth when electricity is turned on or off to the solenoid.

a solenoid is really nothing more than a relay. it allows a small amount of electrical current to control a large amount of current.

At the end of Part Three, we changed the valvetrain of the 3.8-liter V6 in the Tom Henry RS. We installed new, Yella Terra "Ultralite" 1.8:1, aluminum roller rocker arms, Katech valve springs and Katech titanium retainers on our 3800 Series II V6.
