  • Gas Mileage Problems

    I've got a 1995 Firebird m5 which is getting about 17 mpg on the street and when I drive on the freeway alot it only gets about 18 mpg. I don't floor all over the place either. The car won't see over 2,000 rpm unless I'm hopping on the freeway. The car only has 53,000 miles on it. I just finished changing the O2 sensors and i didn't see any change whatsoever. I can only go about 245 miles on a tank and I've heard of others going over 300. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

      Thanks for the welcomejavascript: x()

      tire pressure: 35 lbs (cold)
      air filter: brand new, maybe a month on filter. (double checked just in case and it's clean).
      fuel filter: Don't know the status on that but it's getting swapped out this week.(Is it hard to do)?
      Vacuum hoses: Good condition, no leaks
      Plugs: AC Delco Rapidfire which were put in less than a week ago. (Old ones had carbon, but not a substantial amount. Minimal amounts)
      Wires: Still in good condition however they will be changed out soon for hopefully some Taylor wires.
      Oil: Changed it out about 1200 miles ago. Still looks somewhat golden brown.
      Tranny fluid: How do I check that because I swear I've looked and looked but can't find a dipstick :D :D

          I also get 18 MPG with my auto, with 95,000 on the odometer. I do mostly highway driving, avg 70-75 MPH w/ cruise control. I don't understand why my MPG are so low as well. Kind of nullifies the "better MPG" reason to get a V6 F-body. :mad:

                I'm almost starting to feel better now that I know that I'm not the only one bad mileage but it still sucks to have mileage like that. When they did the 'MSD DIS-4' review, the tested car was getting about 23mpg before the ignition system and about 25mpg after. My auto shop teacher just got a corvette and said he gets about 23mpg. The 2002 Trans Ams claim between 19/26 mpg. Makes me wonder if something is really wrong, but then again I don't know (that's why I came here).

                    In my 3.4 1993, I get about 250miles to the tank with 114k on the odometer, still bad gas mileage for such a small engine, I'd also like to know what I can do to increase that...course I have over 100k on mine so shrug hehe...

                      It depends entirely on how hard you drive it sometimes. On my 97' Firebird I get 300+ a tank. My gas gauge is ****ed though so when it reads 1/4 it is really empty :rolleyes:

                      Makes it a pain sometimes but I usually average 23-28mpg.

                        sometimes the smaller the engine the worse the gas mileage...its all relevant to the kind of driving you do...for highway miles, our big brother turns very low RPMS and gets great mileage...but when it comes to stop-go-stop-go...we have the advantage..not by much though...and with a smaller engine you are lugging the engine more, which makes the carb (or efi) dump more gas into the cylinders...doesnt mean your going faster just the amount of gas needed to get the car going...
