Hmm... I can't ghetto tech that.

Looks like I'm not getting out of this for less than $85.

I was looking on their website and it has the palm cable listed for $19.95. That's why I was thinking I could get it for only 20 bucks. But after what you all have said I guess that that's just an additional cord and I would still need all of the other hardware too.

has anyone even opened up one of those "magical" translator boxes? i know a guy who has atap, but he's too chicken sh!t to even undo the screws to let me take a look inside there. :(

is there even a PCB in there? or does the box just convert the 4 pins from the obdii conector to a 9 pin serial?

Someone with autotap should investigate this, So the rest of us can ghetto fab a cord.

I can't believe you people. It is AutoTap's intellectual property that they have worked hard to develop, and you just want to steal it because you're cheap?

If you want to build your own OBDII scanner from the bottom up, that's one thing. Asking for pirated programs and proprietary electronic schematics is another. If you don't want to spend the money on AutoTap, then get a different OBDII scanner that is cheaper, like the www.ScanTool.net one.

Just to put this **** to rest, here are some pictures of the AutoTap translator box opened up. The folks who developed AutoTap weren't stupid, the box isn't just there to cross over wires. This is a 1.x version translator box, the new 2.x version is even more complicated.

Has anyone figured out how to ghetto fab a translator box yet?

You would have to custom program the chip, as the program asks the chip itself if it's an Autotap one.
