  • Brake pad problem, please help!

    My passenger side brake pad is a little loose. I tighen down the bolts as much as I can (the one closer to the floor) but the pad feels as if it can move in and out of the caliper. The driver side feels nice and secure. What can I do to tighten the pad so it won't scrape the inside of the wheel.

    Please help im a newb to the brake system. :(

    If you step on the brake pedal, do the pads clamp the rotor on that side? Could your caliper possibly be seized? Can you move the caliper in/out on the slide bolts?

      Yes, it clamps the rotor.
      Be seized? I don't know really (Im a boob) can you expalain more?
      On the slide bolts, yes it slides in and out (bottom portion more than the top). On my old wheel the lower bolt came out once and the pad came loose. It scratched the inside of the wheel w/ the edge of the pad. :(

          The caliper has to move in/out on the slide bolts to apply even pressure to both sides of the rotor because it is a single piston caliper.

          When the piston gets stuck, usually from a bad O ring seal, the caliper is "seized". If your brakes are working on that side, this isn't the case.

          If the only problem you're having is that the bottom slide bolt keeps working itself loose, make sure to clean up the threads (both bolt and bracket) so there's no grease in there. If it still works loose, some Red (non-permanant) Loctite should do the trick. Apply only a small amount on the bolt threads.

            Viper the brake pad is loose, caliper does not move, only the brake pad.

              ^^^^I'll be sure to try this.

              The bottom slide can be as tight as hell but the brake pad is still loose. Eventually the bottom bolt (after awhile) works itself loose and the pad disassembles itself from the caliper, then scrapes the inside of the wheel.

                There should be clips on the pads that hold them in place. The inside pad clips into the piston and the outer pad clips to the caliper. Is one of your clips bent or broken off?

                      Really Ian? My front pads have clips on the outer pads too (in addition to the nipples) that hold it to the caliper. I've had the stock AC Delco pads, Perf. Fric. Carbon Met. and now Bendix Titanium and they've all used clips. Could it be certain brands don't have them or was it a design change?

                        Well I fixed it. :D
                        It was actually the clips and the one of the nipples on the pad was grinded (I don't know why). I got new brake pads and thats when I saw what was wrong, yes one of the clips was very open, how weird. Installed the new pads, bolted the caliper down, brake pad feels snuggly tight and now all is well. Thanks Ian.

                            Glad you got it fixed nino, sorry, but my post i gave you wrong information. I went out and actually looked at my pads today, and saw that indeed i did have a clip on the outer pads, its just that it came attached to them so i forgot about it i guess. My suggestion would have been to bend the clip in to ensure a snug fit, but i see you got it fixed.

                            I edited my post so i dont mess anyone up doing a search later on down the road.
