You can go online to order the exact resistor that you need. It isn't hard, why solder a mess when all you need is one. http://www.mouser.com/catalog/619/392.pdf

My dad works for a GM Dealer, The lock cyclendar is 110$ + labor 1-3 hours. Its a ***** to replace properly.

I agree with razzar....you can easily obtain the exact value resistor.

OK...I'm not an electrical engineer, but I do believe this should work. Hopefully someone with more experience than me will confirm.

got the car running
ok, what we did was:
-found a 11.07 K ohms( 11.97 is what my key was running) resistor.
-unplugged the connection.
-put together a setup that had a metal connector that would fit in the two holes, hooked a wire on each side of the resistor and made a little setup like that:

metal connector-wire-resistor-wire-metal connector

-hooked both ends in the plug on the sterring column side, not the white white side, but the white purple and white black side

- plugged it in and started it up :D

***please read my other question in the forum***

Hey, that's my picture. I posted that a while back. The wires break back inside the little recess there. Only one of my wires broke. It is a 55 dollar part off the shelf, and total cost was 275 installed and all. Anywho, good luck with the resistor, but I like having the PassKey II setup. Keeps the inexperienced thieves from stealing the car. If they are a professional theif, they wont be worried about stealin my car, cause they'll have bigger aspiratoins.

Why rig it? just replace the ign tumbler and be done with it.

instead of sorting through the posts in the thread. here is how you test for that broken wire.

Use a DVOM digital volt ohm meter, to find the resistence value of the pellet in the key. Record this reading. Go under the dash and find the 2 wire connector that holds the ign tumbler wires. they are 2 small white wires in an orange sheeth. unplug it. While still reading ohms stick one prob in one termonal of the connector going to the colum and the other probe on the other termonal of the same connector. Then turn the key to the on position. The meter should read the same value as the key. If it reads different then you have a bad connetion, if it reads open or infinet then you have a broken wire.

Are the wires were you spliced in the resistor in the steering column or under the dash??

they are under the dash. you pull the covers off and right there is a plug with two white wires with a orange cover and on the otherside, a white&black and a white&purple. i unplugged it and stuck the resistor in the 4 wire side.

Re: Ignition Lock Cylinder went out today :(

Alright my security light was on (but the car still starts) so I took the wires apart to check them. Anyways, the car will start with those wires disconnected. I thought that it worked by getting a resistance reading from the chip in the key from the orange wire. The wires were right. They were the ones shown in the picture. I don't see how the car starts with those two wires unconnected. Can anyone explain how those work a little better.
