how much does one cost? "estimate"
and also has anyone ever had one changed and if
so could you tell me how much it cost? reason i ask is mine is bad or so they say.

im so sick of my car right now, its been in and
out of shop for the past month and a half, first they thought it was the computer so they put a new computer in and reprogrammed it, was fine for a day or two, i got sick of my cat rattling and being clogged up so i ditched it thinking that would solve the problem, but nope, same damn thing, so i took it back to the shop and they said it was the fuel pump, put a lil tester gauge thing on it and it was at "10" i asked what it should be on, he said "40". they said they cant get to it till wed, tues at the earliest. im so sick of not having my car, i mean my parents let me borrow one of my dads but still i miss my damn car....im already over $400 into it thinking, that for the computer and ditched cat....im running out of money....
oh heres the problem.....it doesnt do it all the time, maybe 1-2 times every other month or so, it started about 5 mo ago, and this last time it did it it was about a month and a half ago.....ok i'll be cruisin along bout 65-70 doin the speed limit then all of a sudden i feel it losing power, bogging down, i'll give it gas and it does jack ****, it'll act like it wants to go, and go just a tad then bog down real bad like it wants to die, but doesnt actually die, so i had to pull over on the side of the hwy and kill it for about 10-15 min then start it up and it'd be fine for about 15-20 miles, then do the same damn thing. i was about 45 min from my house when it started f'ing up...i dont get it, i live in claremore and i was driving to tulsa, bout 45 min from here, i get a mile from where i was going and came to a stop light, stopped, light turned green, i gave it gas, and it just barely wanted to go..............i love it but if this doesnt fix it then im getting rid of the damn thing.

before the fuel pump, have you done a tune up with a new fuel filter, plugs, etc recently?

I got my walbro 255lph fuel pump for like $120 and installed it myself by cutting an access hole in the hatch area. When my pump was going out the car would run fine, then sometimes not start, after like an hour it would start again and run fine. One day it just completely died and wouldn't start.

If your car is bogging down it could be a fuel filter or something that is easily taken car of with a good tune up. So yea when was the last time it was changed?

Also yea the fuel pressure should be at 43psi and so 10 psi would hardly keep the car running. Mine was dying at 10psi

first, thanks for the response, (also im just now getting, well "trying" to get into motors and **** like that, so i might ask some stupid questions, well to you, not very familiar with engines and **** like that)ive never had a tuneup since ive had it, had it about a year and a half, so it could possibly just be a bad fuel filter? the fuel filter, plugs, etc..haven't been changed since ive got them, because up until recently(this little incident) it ran great.

well the fuel filter is cheap and a couple minute job to swap out. You could try that. Spark plugs are a pain in the rear to get at and change. It took me forever to change mine when I added the nitrous.

How many miles are on the car, and how many have you put on since you bought it?

well i dropped off the car at the shop yesterday, its got 110xxx.....ive probally put 40000 on it............also, as i said before, he(the mechanic) put a lil gauge tester to test the fuel pump, and it only went to 10, could a bad fuel filter be causing that? or is the fuel filter as he says?....thanks for your help man

Well your fuel filter needs to be changed anyways, should change that like every 30k miles. But being that he tested your fuel pressure and you were getting 10psi is not a good sign.

What makes this situation difficult is the fact that it happens randomly and it doesn't kill the engine. It is like it is getting some fuel the whole time but just not enough as if something is restricting it (fuel filter possibly).

When my fuel pump was going out it would kill the engine. When you turn the key on, but don't start the car do you hear the fuel pump kicking on everytime?

^^^^exactly, it doesnt kill the car and when it does it, i would just pull over and let it sit for 10-15min and it would start right up

just change the fuel filter anyways first to make sure it is the pump. You need to change your fuel filter anyways with the mileage you got and they are pretty cheap to buy from autozone or wherever. Then if it still does it take it to the mechanic to replace the fuel pump.

Are you going to be modding the car in the future? If so you might want to think about a high flow walbro pump instead. They are cheaper than the OEM replacements and flow more to support future mods. I know the OEM replacements are like the whole pump and sending unit as one big unit which is outragously priced compared to a 120-130 walbro fuel pump.

as soon as i can i will get back to the shop and change it....i would love to do some more stuff(mods) to it but havin a family(g/f and daughter and son) finances are pretty much spent on them..which is fine by me, but maybe a chip or somethin......also i have no idea what kind of fuel pump he will put back on it, should i ask for a high flow walbro pump like yours even if i dont do any more major mods? or just a regular fuel pump? i appreciate all your help buddy

as for the fuel pump, it is up to you if you want to pay more for an OEM direct replacement or get an aftermarket one. The walbro 255lph pump does just fine for NA engines but you do need to get it to fit the bucket in your tank correctly or ditch the bucket like I did and zip tie it to the sending unit. Cheaper route would be the Walbro but your mechanic might just want to stick with a direct replacement pump from GM or whatever.

Also I see by your name that you have a 1999 RS??? Is that a clone because they stopped making the RS in 1997 and there were a few RS's made by SLP in 01-02. Make a cardomain site and get some pics up and stuff. ;)

I hope it's not the fuel pump. Mine went out in January on my 2002 after 40k miles. Thankfully it was covered under the extended warranty because the bill was $1200!

The labor's expensive because they either have to cut a hatch or drop the rear-end to get to the pump and the part by itself was $500-ish. (I check around, price as in line with other places.)

Try the fuel filter and make sure your air filter is clean. Hopefully, that will do it.

                      Good luck!

I had my fuel pump replaced about 1.5 years ago. I went to a local shop and they installed an AC Delco factory pump for $625 out the door. The pump was $345 and the rest was labor and tax. It was also warrantied for 1 year/12,000 miles. So far no problems...
