  • SUPERCHARGER INSTALLED!!

Hey guys, it is finally comppleted. I got the SC installed this weekend. At idle Fuel Pressure is reading 42. So far it feels great, haven't really romped on it yet though, the max I have gotten it to is 5 psi boost and the Fuel pressure raises to 56ish. Does that sound about right? And that wasn't even at WOT. I am hoping to finally see 6 to 7 psi of boost once I do go WOT. One more thing, When I am at idle what should by VAC/BOOST gauge be reading, it reads close to 20 vac, is that okay??? Over all, the car feels great and alot more powerful. Hope to hear your suggestions.

Hey congrats and welcome to FI. Everything sounds normal. That's how I have mine too.

Be sure to tighten the belt a couple more times after some time.

dmw319 trust me it is well worth the wait. Thor, I am getting some belt sqeeking but the belt seems pretty tight, can it be too tight, I think it is mainly coming from the new tensioner pulley itself, I am going to check today and see if the bearings need some oil.

It could be. The 8 years I've owned the PD, I've replaced the idler 2 times and the tensioner once.

The noise though would be one continues sound. If you have a stetascope you can probably listen to it.

If you did the JohnD wrap, belt squeeking should be non-existant. Only in the Standard set up did I ever heard squeeking. And my belt right now really needs to be replaced.

I did use the John D wrap, Me and a friend are going to use a c-clamp like grayman recommends to tighten the belt tonight.

              cool.

what FMU did you get with your kit? is it a normal rksport kit? it so it should be a vortech 6/1 ratio fmu. at 5psi it will add 30 pounds of fuel pressure.

i go from 50 psi F/P (idle) to 84-88 psi fuel pressure when i hit 6 psi.

if your math is correct for what you are experiencing then you seem to have about a 3/1 ratio FMU. this may not be enough fuel to keep you safe.

On the other hand the FMU does seem to be 'hooked up' and working. it is raising the FP when you see boost so you know the vac lines are working.

is your narrow band A/F gauge atleast staying 'ALL LIT UP' (full rich) while you are seeing boost?

your VAC reading of 20 is perfect at idle is perfect. vac lines seem like theay are good to go.

In my experience it is kinda hard to get the belt 'too tight.' no matter what i do with the c clamp it always wants to spin off the pulley when it is getting real tight. (the pulley is round and spins on a bearing and the clamp is turning so it can only get so tight before the clamp slips off) So when i am done with the clamp and have tightened the pulley nut the belt is always within limits as far as not seeming too tight. (the twist test).
but, when the belt is a little loose i get random squeaks (pretty much the entire accessories chain) at idle. It gets worse if i turn on the AC. (sometimes real chirpy with AC on and the belt a little loose) sometimes even having the heater on makes the belt chirp a bit. Not sure why this happens. It all goes away, though, once i get the belt tight again.

(not sure if i mentioned this in my c clamp web page but it seems to work for me to get the clamp on the pulley with the pulley nut just a little loose...tighten the c clamp as much as i can...then tighten the pulley nut just a tad...then place a screwdriver on the square area on the pulley bolt (the part that rides inside the tensioner...not the nickle plated bushing) and tap that hard with a hammer. (basic rksport intructions) and then finish tightning the pulley nut)

I also swapped out the plastic rksport tensioner pulley with the metal stock 3800 idler pulley that is removed during basic install of kit. the metal pulley is much stronger and better suited for the c clamp.

right now i have reached the limits of the stock RKSport belt. the tensioner has bottomed out after about 10,000 miles on that first belt. Will be trying my 103.8" belt again soon. (it seemed too short the first time i tried and the rksport belt worked...up till just recently... so i never tried to force the shorter belt on again...)

let us know about your FMU and also the basic rksport kit yoou have. i don't remember if you bought it brand new or used....if used then the fmu might have been modified....or replaced with an afermarket one. but it surely doesn't seem like a 6/1 ratio.

(don't kill your engine on my account....but it might be ok with a 3/1 ratio...don't know unless you have a wideband o2 sensor to tell you your presice A/F ratio under boost)

p.s. I will be looking at a slight modification to the entire belt system that lets you 'get a little extra' tightness in the belt 'after' the normal tighting of the pulley procedures. I just need some time for other things.

The kit is an RKSport Kit for the straight throttle body. The FMU is the 6:1 Vortec that came with the kit. Everything seems to be working fine and it sounds good and the FP rises as the Boost rises. I will give u more accurate numbers later on.

                      Hey Crow...
what size did the oil sender elbow end up being?
I want to make a note of it.
I trust steve and all...it is just stuck in my head that it was 1/8 npt. most of the rest of the car and engine is metric but those sender fittings are npt. curious for what you used.

Is there really a 3:1 FMU?

I thought 6:1 FMU was as low as it'll go. Then there's the 8:1, 10:1 and the biggest one is 12:1.

The elbow is 3/8 NPT here is the one I finally found and it worked beautifully...

I finally was able to find a patch of highway to open it up and sure enough everything is working fine. The car sounds like a whole new animal. When I got to 6 psi boost the FP was at 78 to 80 psi. I love it. Can't wait for the road trip this weekend to the Daytona Spring show. I will take some nice pics and post them up.
