  • 3.73s and Auburn, woot woot!

I bought a 98 T/A rear that was just completely rebuilt with 3.73s recently. I got it for $400 shipped, which I think was an absolute steal of a deal considering I won't have to pay install for better gears or anything further down the road. Just got a call from home that it showed up this morning. I'll clean it up real well tonight...wire brush and all, then paint it. And hopefully it will go into the car tomorrow evening!

We actually managed to get it into Fedex ground. It weighed 151lbs and the limit is 150...so somehow we squeaked it by. Ended up being like 80 for shipping which isn't bad at all.

Re: 3.73s and Auburn, woot woot!

Well last night I got my old rear out. The new one had no ebrake stuff so I had to pull the axles on both rears and swap over that stuff. Pulling axles is much easier than I expected BTW. It would be a cinch to replace wheel bearings on these things. I also gave the new rear a good brushing down to get rid of some of the rust, and I painted the cover black.

Anyway, the new rear is all ready to go up into the car tonight! Can't wait to get it in there.

I was wondering...How do I tell what kind of gear it has? It's supposed to be a 3.73 but the only lettering I found stamped was "GM" and a long dashed number. Does that mean it was made by GM? Did GM make 3.73 gears? I guess I could try the ol' rotate the yoke and see how many turns it takes for a revolution...but if there's a more elegant way I'd like to know.

            count the teeth?

A friend of mine tried to explain this one, so this may not be 100% (maybe someone can jump in), but motive makes the OEM gears. He told me to buy motives for my car because they needed less shim work for the right fit b/c they were OEM. Maybe that's why yours says "GM" on it?

btw, I have an axle sitting in my garage with 3.73s and posi ready for install. I am just saving up funds to get some springs to toss in while I am at it. Let us know how she feels with the 3.73's!

I'd recommend that you just put in the axle. Springs are the first thing to fall out when you lower the axle. It takes like 10 minutes to just do the rear springs.

I have shocks to install too. If I don't come up with the money for springs soon, I probably will just toss in the axle for now.

Re: 3.73s and Auburn, woot woot!

Well the rear is in. Got it running last night. Here's my 3 main impressions:

                  1. Holy cow! Those rpms go by pretty fast! This thing seems to be haulin' balls!

                  2. For daily driving, each gear requires just a blip of gas before I need the next gear. I think that has the potential to improve my city mileage if I drive it right.

                  3. The gears whine a bit. I think that's expected from aftermarket gears. It's not extremely loud but it's there. (Please give me input on this...I need some security that this thing won't explode...if that's possible to get...)

All said, I think this thing makes a very nice difference in my gofast. Especially in the lower gears. Well worth the money.

                  SOTP:
Aluminum DS felt like an extra nudge in the seat.
3.23 to 3.73 feels like someone is lifting the front of the car.

I couldn't agree with you more.

As for the gear whine, does it do it only at high speeds or low speeds as well? B/c i had mine put in (paid a guy to do it, didn't trust myself) and they whined a lil bit @ 75mph or more. But they don't whine anymore. And the lil noises they'd been making are now gone.

Well I can start to notice it around 40mph. Of course, I do have some sound deadening removed in the back so I can hear everything that goes on under the car.

My speedo is off right now, soon to be fixed when I get HPTuners.

Going from a 3.23 gear to a 3.73 gear... 3.73 is 115% of 3.23. That means right now my speedo is 15% off. It reads 15% fast. So if I'm going 50mph, speedo says 57.5mph.

As for ABS, it all works fine. I had a 3 channel rear and swapped in a 3 channel rear, so everthing worked perfect. (3 channel = 1 abs sensor in the rear, 4 channel = 2 abs sensors in the rear)

there are 3 stock ratios 3.23s are for the sticks and 3.08's and 3.42s are for the autos, most of the time if your auto is newer maybe 2000 and up u'll have 3.42s "MOST OF THE TIME". To make sure check the sticker with the codes on the inside panel of the driver door.
