• aftermarket converter and dyno testing...

Okay, did a search, no luck.

I'm curious how a high stall converter with lockup will affect dyno numbers.

I know it will multiply my torque and this should affect the curve at least until it locks up in 3rd. Obviously there could be come slippage on the dyno because of the extra power...?

When it locks up, will it show torque numbers higher than the stock converter, all other things being equal?

Would you still dyno in 3rd?

    Thanks!

I remember someone recently posting about a new converter and having problem on the dyno in 3rd. I think it may have kept unlocking but I"m not 100% sure. I know they mentioned they didn't get a full reading because they could only go to a certain RPM!

Maybe they'll reply and let you know sorry I'm not much help but I know recently there has been at least 1 post about it!

Yeah I think it was James(12sec)... that thread raised all these questions

I'm really close to buying a converter, and just want to get all the details I can about how these things work... this is the last piece i think

to try and answer your questions.

to get more accurate results on the dyno you will need to install a lock up switch..yes your converter will be a lock up converter meaning when you go into over drive it locks up for increased fuel economy.

when the converter locks its basically dynoing the engine and drivetrain, the converter if locked will not be generating increased tq for you but however it wil be more efficient so you might gain a little

yeah yeah im rambling..only real way to get accurate numbers on dyno is with a lock up switch..

          what stall..i suggest the PI3500

So the lockup switch allows you to lock up before 3rd? Is that why it helps? Where do you get them? HOw much?

            thanks

i dont know of any place that sells them, although im sure there are some, i never really looked.. i know you can make them, really all it is is splicing into the PCM wires and making a grounded switch to actvate the lock up solenoid early..

keith doesnt suggest using the lock up switch other than on the dyno. i agree, no use really at the track, some v8 boys use them to gain efficiency but the gains you would see would be very very miniscule compared to the risk of a lock up switch.

Thanks man... i might look into doing that. Sounds easier than rigging up my fan switch
