• Aluminum Driveshaft Hitting

Heres the Problem, I installed an LS1 Al driveshaft a few weeks ago and now it is hitting the transmission tunnel.

I located the problem area -- the flange at the transmission end of the shaft is hitting the tunnel at lower RPMs in 1st and second gear.

I believe that it could be caused by the excessive vibration of a worn out tranny mount, but it is probably more than that. A new 1LE mount and poly torque arm bushing are going in this weekend.

Any ideas on how to fix it if the tranny mount doesn't which I suspect it won't. I'd rather not grind the flange down because I could throw off the balance. I could grind down the transmission tunnel where it is hitting but I'd rather not put a hole in my floor.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Everything I have read about this by searching for "aluminum driveshaft" on this website indicates these driveshafts are completely interchangeable. Some folks have had to adjust exhaust slightly or grind a support bracket, but I have not seen any complaints about hitting the floorpan.

I would bet that (1) your mount is worn or broken as you suspect, (2) your crossmember is bent or installed incorrectly, allowing the tranny to get too close to the floor, or (3) the wrong mount or spacers were installed under your tranny (assuming you are not the original owner) making it too close to the floor.

Also: is it the original/correct tranny for the car?

I am the second owner and the other owner told me that the car didn't really have any huge problems with it (no engine or tranny problems is how I took it).

It very well could be the crossmember, i will look into it. The original 2-piece didn't have this problem, but it did duck down a bit more due to the center u-joint support.

I just had the clutch done about 5k ago and my mechnic(a former GM dealer mechanic) didn't mention anything funny about the tranny.

not to sound like an *** .. but have you thought about a big hammer?? it is likely that your unibody is a little out of whack.. causing something to be out of place.. if the part that is hitting the driveshaft is part of the floorpan you could just dent it in a little with a big hammer.. you proably won't be able to tell much of anything from inside the car.. as what you are denting in is likely under the center console anyway

I hear ya, I've thought about that plenty, that may be the best idea. If the mount doesn't change the height of the tranny then to the hammer I go, and if that doesn't work then I'll go to the grinder.

The two-piece driveshaft on my 95 does not have that big flange on the yoke.

I looked under my car, and it looks like the cross-member would be very difficult to install incorrectly. The bottom of the cross member is just about flat.

With the recent clutch job, maybe something was not put together right - make sure all the bolts on the cross-member, tranny mount are tight. If not, I guess it's hammer-time

I had the same problem with my car. I always thought it was the exhaust hitting under the car, since i recently had it done. I put it on the lift and saw where a clamp was hitting the floor pan and moved it so it wouldn't. that still didn't solve the problem. I left it like that for a while until one day i put it back on the lift to look at the tranny mount, which i also thought was worn, and saw that somehow the 2 lower bolts in the mount had backed out to where about 1/2" of thread was showing. the sound i was hearing was the safety bracket on the transmission when the transmission slammed up into it, it was really shiny now. My uncle, who is a mechanic, said had i gone a while longer and one of the bolts came loose i could have snapped the end of the transmission off it being aluminum and all. Anyway, that may be something to look at. Wouldn't be good to have to replace a transmission housing. I tightened down the bolts and I have SOOO much more torque than i WAS gettin to the ground.
