When I had my 98 V6 firebird with a 5speed I had 3.23's, 3.73's, and 4.10's in it and the 4.10's actually had the best MPG. The car was so easy to drive with the 4.10's that you hardly had to touch the gas to get it moving. I dont remember the numbers but I know that my MPG went up a mile or 2 around town or on the highway. When I drove I never took the car about 3000 rpms because it sounded like crap above 3k.
idk but my camaro sounds bad *** above 3000 i got a magna flow cat back and awesome whats diffrence between all of those ratios
No V6 F-body sounds amazing above 3k.. From idle to 3000 you would swear my V6 was a LS1!!
Dont quote me because its been 5 yrs or so since I have actually worked on 10 bolts but the Gear ratio I believe is how many times the Driveshaft spins around completely to how many time the wheels spin around compltetly.. So a 3.23 ratio is the D/S spins around 3.23 times for every 1 rear wheel revolution..
Jeff ..
1998 Firebird.. Built 3.8 with a 125 shot.. 370rwhp,415rwtq.. stock tune!! sold
that would make sense since you have to rev higher with higher gears to achieve the same speed. Do gears affect dyno numbers then? It seems like they would increase lower end torque with maybe a loss in top end hp?
96 White M5 Camaro. Manual everything. Magnaflow cat, dynomax dual outlet axle back. Swapped to a disc rear with 3.42s and a torsen differential, kyb gr2 rear shocks, moog rear endlinks.
My V6 with the 3.73's dynoed 365 and 428 to the wheels and with the 4.10's it made 370 and 433 to the wheels. I dont know if that was because of the gears or because of the N20?

That's not too far off. When I had my V6 a lot of people thought it was a V8 when I was at idle. Granted, most of them were mustang or import owners...lol! But with the same exhaust setup and different engine, you can definitely tell the difference between the 3.8 and LS1. It's the subtle depth of tone; V6 sounds like a middleweight, LS1 sounds like a heavyweight.
And I thought the gear ratio had to do with the # of teeth on the ring gear?

The gear ratio has to do with the number of teeth on the ring gear. The ring gear will spin once for the pinion spinning 3.23 times if you have a 3.23 gear ratio. Which is why when you see the tire rotate once the driveshaft rotates 3.23 times. The pinion is connected to the driveshaft (via the yoke and u joint) and the rear wheel/tire is connected to the ring gear (via the axle and differential)
Well, going along with this thread, I just checked my 97 base V6 convertible and found out my axle code kind of stinks. GU4 which equals 3.08s. Just as I thought. That and it has drum brakes. Maybe I'll start looking for a disc-equipped axle with better gears and a posi.
Its probably better to pick up a low mileage 3:42 rearend with the brakes. I did drum to disc not too hard. I plan on installing my 98+ brakes up front sometime soon.

96' Camaro M5 to A4 conversion, alot of mods . GT35R Turbo full suspension. Built engine
Funny, but I just started a thread about doing an axle swap. I found someone selling a 3.42 posi axle out of a 2001 SS with 21K on it that's been in dry storage with no rust for $800. It seems a bit steep to me, but I don't know. I guess if the brakes are good and everything, maybe that's not so bad.
Went ahead and moved my starter wire from the back, to the front again since it had no effect on my drain on the battery. Also made me nervous driving...
