  • How hard is it to fix engine knock?

Whats worse case scenario on what I would have to replace on a 3.8 with engine knock? Reason I ask is I have a chance to buy a cheap 98-02 firebird that is nice but has a knock.

i would never ever buy it.

even if you fix it figure that you probably have metal shavings in your system now. so if you fix your engine...the metal can f up the rebuilt engine if you don't take it fully apart and pressure cleaned

engine knock is usually caused by bad bearings, broken rod, or piston slap

if you spun a bearing, you might have to get the crank polished, or ground down for an oversize bearing, or have to clean the rod up, if it is a broken rod, your cylinder wall could be gouged, meaning you would have to get the block bored out, or if its piston slap, you will need at least a new piston

since this is just a 3.8l engine, i would buy a new one, there is no reason to spend $400+ on machine work when you can get a full engine for a little more (or less)

Depends on how cheap the car is, just say screw it.

Buy the car, rip the old motor out and forget about it, and pick up a good used motor for $500 or so, and re-install.

They are asking $2,500 but I figured may be able to talk them down. Its pretty nice looking, here is a picture of it.

            Maybe not?

Engine knock means there's something seriously wrong with the internals. You're looking at an overhaul there. You're talking about a thrown rod or something of that nature.
