  • Head gaskets. Apply sealant or no?

I blew my head gasket so I'm planning on getting a new one installed. I was wondering though. In my Haynes manual, it tells me to apply sealant if steel gaskets are used. Well, I ordered the head gasket kit from GM parts direct. I don't really know if those are steel or not. I also remember reading on here that sealant shouldn't be used on head gaskets because it will just make the head gasket blow. Any ideas?

        GOD NO!!!!
        NO sealant!!!
I made the same mistake and used red RTV, it worked though.
I still had to redo it because i found out it wont last long
The reason I used rtv is because of the Haynes

Alright, thanks. Good thing I asked here before I made the same mistake.

another reason I used Red RTV is because the Oreilly's clerk JOEY specifically said use RED RTV.
Then when I took it back the dam General Manager said to use the copper spray. The G.M. also said to reuse the dam Torque 2 Yield head bolts! Both of them are dumbasses!
