• is my computer bad?

Friday at work i borrowed one of the mechanics Scanners. (i found out i have OBD2) so i was scanning my computer to see if i had any codes, Due to a possible abs problem.
And it kept saying it cant communicate with my computer. Is that a sign that my PCM is bad? the couple mechanics said it was, but i wanted to ask some fbody pros.

any help would be great

Sounds like the fuse is blown. It's happened a couple times here. I believe it's the same fuse as the cigarette lighters. Check all your fuses to see if they're good.

The likelyhood of the PCM being bad is pretty close to 0. There's a dozen other things that would break before that would.

I'll get my manual out and see exactly which one you need to check.

Check the fuseblock on the inside of the door, fuse #11: CIGAR ACCY.

If your computer would be bad, - you wound not be able to start your car. Computer is the last thing that goes bad , and the first thing to blame when the useless mechanics don’t know what is wrong.

yeah thats what i thought. . Ill check the fuses tomorrow morning and then see if i can use my dads scanner and see if it works.
Im even thinking the mechanics are screwing with me. . because they told one of the other guys there that his pcm is messed up too and hes got an 00 or 02 civic.

Have you configured the scanner to your car? If you haven't configured the scanner to the correct year and make then you would get that "cannot communicate with computer".

What? Some of the early 95 model cars and trucks are labeled as OBDII but were actually still OBDI. I don't know if this has ever been confirmed but I've experienced this kind of issue before. My buddy has a 95 GMC Sonoma and it's supposed to be OBDII, but has never been able to be scanned on any kind of OBDII scanner. It's prolly just the old setup....OBDI with the OBDII interface.

I agree with Matt, check the Cig fuse. but i also wanted to point out that you can have a computer problem and have everything else work including starting your car ;)

95 is the basterd year for gm. They used 16-pin OBD1 ports (normally 12 pin for obd1).
You can use a Obd1 12 pin on a Gm obd1 16 pin this is how.
http://shbox.com/1/xraycable.jpg
Or you just use a 16 pin OBD1 cable. If your using a real scanner like a Tech 2 then they should have this cable for you to use.

Also like stated above check that "11 fuse out

Now i thought the 3.8 in a 95 was for califorina and I thought they had to make it OBD2? If not then use the method i just showed you.

All 3.8s are OBD-II. Only the 3.4s were "OBD-II and a half".

jeanda I used the right cartridges for the scanner. It should have worked from what i understand. But im going to check out that 11 fuse. Why would the cigarette lighter/horn fuse cause the problem?

Because that's where it gets its power from. ;)

on my scanner before you can scan you must configure "year", "make", &"Vin-#". Otherwise the scanner will not recognize what its scanning.
If yours doesnt ask for this information then I guess it might be something else then. -good luck
