  • Timing Advance Question...

Does anybody else get readings of negative degrees on the autotap for the timing advance?

I seem to always be in the range of -42 thru -3. It is always in there somewhere. Typically -24 when at WOT. Is this bad, good, O ****? Anybody else see these numbers. Are they hurting performance? Should I try to fix them?

Like I have mentioned before I am in the process of getting n2o and if this is something that needs to be looked at first then I gotta do it.

Side note: Anyone know of or are looking to sell a kit, part of a kit, bottle, FSS, etc. I am trying to get this stuff but damn its expensive. I dont want to do it all without being as careful as possible.

    thanx

Your car is going to blow up!!! j/k Well for some reason '97 grand prixs show negative timing, but later models display it correctly. I guess fbodies are the same way?

    Just pretend the (-) isn't there. ;)

This was posted on Autotap's forum...

<blockquote>quote:</font><hr>I believe on your vehicle (and most GM's)that a negative number indicates before TDC (advance).
It should be described that way in the service manual also.

is that a bad thing or a ok thing? I just want to make sure it isnt bad. Anybody else seeing this and what does it actually mean. Bad plugs, wires?

What can I do to change these numbers, if they are bad. Anyone have a link to a more explanitory article?

Got the n2o all lined up. Just need to set everything else up straight.

        Thanx

24 degrees of advance at WOT is normal. Shouldn't be that bad for nitrous either.

Mike Huff saw 29 with the Jet Chip.
I saw 28 with no Jet Chip and use a MAF Translator Plus to increase it 2 degrees for NA.

More advance is not a good thing with Nitrous. You could get away with 10 degrees of advance on nitrous and still run fast.

so the negative is just for specifiying advance or retard. right.

40 at some points and 8 at some points are fine as long as it is around 24 at wot?

If it is then I am ready to roll.

Wish me luck with the n2o

The - signal is an error or something.. just pretend its not there.

the higher the RPM's go, the more advance you will see at WOT..

Your timing is fine to run the nitrous but the ecm will probly pick up a little knock on the bottle and retard the timing. If going with a 75 or higher shot I would suggest getting something to retard the timing a little. Either the MSD DIS4 unit or the MAFT+ will work. I would suggest the MAFT+ unit, it's cheaper and provides more tuning options for base and WOT fuel settings. I'm going to be doing a little nitrous testing tonight with the MAFT+ and dyno with it on Saturday.
