  • Intake Gaskets Differences?

Alright, just got done with a cam and we replaced the lower intake gaskets.

The problem is my intake gaskets are leaking anti-freeze. They will steam out sometimes and anit-freeze collects in the little places where the fuel injectors go.

My only guess is that I have the wrong gaskets. I've been told there is a difference in the Camaro 3800 gaskets and others like the Grand Prix and other Old's cars.

I ordered them from ZZP and told them I have a camaro I need gaskets for a camaro. He told me they were the same but people on here have told me different. My freinds car just got intake gaskets on it and the place that did it said they ordered the wrong ones for it and had to re do it.

Is there a difference in the intake gaskets and is that why it could be leaking?

That is the only thing I can think of, they should be all sealed up. The surfaces on both sides of the intake and heads were cleaned with a blade and brush.

It's been a while, but I believe the lower intake was the same, but there may have been a difference in the upper intake. Really don't remember, though. Do you have the part numbers of the gasket you used? I can check to see if they're the same.

Did you use those 2 little o-rings between the upper and lower intakes? What about the seals between the lower intake and block? You torqued all the bolts down in the correct sequence, right?

Yes, everything was torqued correctly, we replaced the o rings too. Yes we used the seals between the intake and block. I'll tighten everything down and hope it stops it but if that doesnt help we'll take it all off and look at the gaskets. I'll try to find the package for the gaskets.

Yeah, ZZP is stupid when it comes to these cam swap gasket sets. First they sent me a GTP set, when clearly ordered the L36 one.

There are two different lower intake setups, once comes with blue rubber gaskets, one comes with orange. The are quite different. If you are leaking coolant, you probably missed one of the O-Rings that goes in between the intakes, or the gasket on the upper is wrong.

The gasket on the upper is right. The o rings should be there. I remember putting them in. I got the gaskets with the orange on them. Which ones was I suppose to get.

I got the right upper intake gasket, i had to go get it from O'Reilly's (hour drive) that day. I dont know why I got lower intake gaskets and didnt get a upper, to get to the lower you have to take the upper intake off, meaning you need a new gaskets???? I also didnt get the water pump... I dont remember if it was necessary to remove it but I thought it was, meaning new gasket.

He is trying to help me out. He sent me GTP gaskets at first but send me another set. I had to put the ones I had back on it. He sent the right ones for free but I wish I could have had it when I had everything torn off.

For anyone doing the cam swap I needed the following gaskets

            Valve Covers
            Water Pump
            Lower Intake
            Upper Intake (Comes with O-Rings)
            Front Engien Cover/Timing Chain Cover

All I got was lower intake, valve covers, and front engine from ZZP.

Should I have the orange or blue intake gasket set?

I can't remember but that wouldn't cause a water leak. It could cause an oil leak though.

I still dont see why they are leaking. There really isnt a way to mess up putting them on. We did not use gasket sealer except on the corners. Would that have anything to do with it? Should it have been used all the way around? (Didnt think so becaus of the type of gasket)

No need for a sealent on the gasket. Could you tell where the leak was coming from?

I looks like it is steaming out of the front of the engine, looked like the intake gasket or th front engien gasket that goes inbetween the intake and block.

It runs like it has an air leak somewhere so I dont think it is the upper intake.

I looked at it earlier and couldnt nail where anything was coming from. I'll look at it again later with a freind.

All I know is I dont think its the water pump or front engine cover gasket and its not the passenger side intake gasket.

My only guess would be in the upper intake or the drivers side lower intake... I cant figure out why it is leaking though? It just slips onto the guides or what ever and you torque it all down....? My only guess still is that I have the wrong gasket set or something was wrong with it.

Got it fixed, after alot of driving trying to get it to spirt out I finally did. It was hard to tell because once it steamed it steamed all over and you couldnt trace it back.

It was the thermostat housing, I caught the little ***** in the act... After taking off most of the intake bolts and torqueing the back down... After that I was pretty much sure it wasnt the intake.
